Another Friday without TC..
who was busy enjoying a school event (a music festival) so we had dinner on the west side of Chula Vista earlier this evening...
Bert hadn't been here before and I only went when Matua's opened more than two years ago. The owners of Matua's used to own Yozokuna's in east Chula Vista, until they closed several years ago. This Chamorro restaurant shares space with Hi-Ball, a bar.
80's Old school music was playing (which reminded us of your high school years)...
To take advantage of my coupon ($15 off of a purchase of $30 or more), we chose the two combos listed, the Chamorro and the Hawaiian combo. We knew there would be MEGA leftovers plus the combos had a little bit of everything we wanted to try.
The vibe is relaxed here. They sure know their regulars. The servers are all very nice young ladies.
We noticed this poster near our table. This is the kind of music they used to play at our school dances. We didn't know who "Cynthia" or "Connie" were but recognized the other female artists. They were missing Shannon though ("Let the Music Play"). On the back wall were more posters with modern musical acts. One of them was local self-described urban reggae band, Tribal Theory. My older nephew's really like this group.
We were asked if we wanted finadene, a condiment served in Guam consisting of soy sauce, lemon, and green onions. One was spicy (with crushed peppers) and the other was not. Both tasted so good with the rice and the meat.
The spread:
Chamorro Combo - red rice, potato salad, pickled daikon, chicken kelaguen and three big ASS pork ribs. This was a serious plate here.
The Hawaiian combo - kalua pork, huli huli chicken, white rice, and mac salad. Both were served with cabbage, as recommended by our server. However, she neglected to tell us that it would cost $1 extra (we saw it later on the receipt) but no big for that.
The chicken was so soft and tender and had such a great flavor. Like the ribs, the chicken was grilled and had a great smoky flavor. The ribs had caramelized fat which I really liked.
Bert and I shared from each others plates and it looked like we didn't even make a dent! Put it this way, TC will surely enjoy the tasty take home.

If you were in high school in the mid-late 80's like Bert and I (and our cotery), this was the kind of music played at the dances down in South Side! Old School all the way!
