When the Coronado Bridge was being built in the late 1960's, the development tore apart the Barrio Logan neighborhood. Community activists were incensed that it was so easy for the city to just tear their neighborhood apart without regard for who lived there. In addition to having a freeway and the bridge run through the community, junkyards ("yonkes") were also prevalent as well as industrial type businesses that belched a lot of harmful smoke in the schoolyard and community.

One of these days, we're going to have to park here and really check out the murals in Chicano Park. Some of theme are really amazing...
