Breakfast @ Nomad Donuts + return to Holy Matcha

After our coffee at The Dojo Cafe, we tried going to the nearby City Heights Coffee House but it was closed....

so instead, we drove westward to North Park for breakfast...

Halloween 2014

Regretfully, this will be the first year we won't have any carved pumpkins gracing our front porch...

We just didn't have enough time this year so we will just have to double the effort next year...

Skybound Coffee & Dessert Lounge

Although we just had dessert earlier at Le Parfait, I wanted to check out a fairly new dessert place downtown...

It was just a few blocks west and gave Bert and I a chance to walk off our calories from that awesome almond and chocolate croissant...

Return to Classic Rock Sandwich Shoppe & Subterranean Coffee Boutique

Remembering how much we liked this place last year, TC and I went back to North Park at this quirky sandwich shoppe with rock and roll memorabilia...

The same guy who made our sandwiches last year was there along with Cheryl Dagostaro, the very friendly and chattty owner...

Classic Rock Sandwich Shoppe

This was one of the "new" coupons in the book and luckily, to a place I really wanted to try out...

so that is what TC and I did  a few weeks ago during our recent Fall break where we went out almost every day and tried to use coupons as much as possible...

It's a few doors down from the very retro Lucky's on the corner of North Park Way and Grim. I like that this is a bit "hidden" and not on the main drag of North Park...

The merry merry month of May

April came and went by so quickly...I was surprised to find that there is a song about May 1st:

Wow, so THAT'S what Barry Gibb looks like without his beard and leonine hair! It was wierd seeing the Bee Gees wearing tweed instead of white leisure suits unbuttoned all the way down to their belly button and adorned by gold medallions....

There was another song about the fifth month as well...

Foodcrawl with Bert - Strawberry Fields Forever

Because I couldn't resist...

For you music geeks, this is a different version than the one you'd hear on the radio...

After 30+ years of living in the South Bay, not once had we been to the Strawberry Field on 4th and Main. Well, my friends, today would be that lucky day.

Bert in stood in line while I snapped shots of this operation...

We got a pound of berries which cost all of $2!

As you may already know, strawberries are seasonal so we wanted to get these babies while they were still around...

I've always wondered how they protected the fields from poachers at night...

Look at those luscious berries...drool.

This is one of the last few remaining pieces of farmland in south Chula Vista that I know of.

Each berry was vibrantly red! Unlike the horrible ones you get at the stores where it's yellow or green near the cap end. No, each and every single piece of fruit was fragrant and delicious! The difference between eating a farm fresh berry from a store bought one is amazing!

I love my new camera by the way! Thanks to my husband Bert!

Oh yeah man...cradle this.

I'm so glad I fit into my grey skinny jeans again! And they're loose too! I was ready to give them away to a friend last month but ever since I started eating "right" and cut out carbs, bread and sweets from my diet, I've found myself fitting into a lot of my older clothes! So fkg A! A person could be thin but still be "fat" (believe it or not, I had a tiny bit of a gut or love handles or whatever it's called). Except this time, I'm losing the fat through proper diet and exercise. I am definitely not starving myself. I love food too much to give it up!

Here's another "strawberry related" video...this time from the 80's:

Loved Siousxie Sioux's eye makeup! Well, her's was pretty extreme. When I was younger, I used to emulate Joan Jett and Chryssie Hynde's look (eyeliner-wise).

Here's an article I dug up on the different strawberry fields in San Diego. Turns out that this one is owned by the Kusaka family who moved to Chula Vista from Idaho back in 1945. The type of strawberries they sell at this stand are "giant camarosas".
"Picked, Packed, Perfect" (SD Union Tribune, May 28, 2005)

Next time you guys are ever down south in Chula Vista, stop by the fields for some strawberries!

On a cold winter's day forty eight years ago in London, American poet Sylvia Plath took her own life at age 30, during one of the most brutal winters. Despondent over her husband Ted Hughes's affairs and suffering from depression, she taped up the doors in the kitchen to avoid the gas from escaping and poisoning her young children and gassed herself in the oven.

She was such a ferocious talent waiting to happen. Published one month before her suicide, her semi-autobiographical novel, The Bell Jar was published under a pseudonym, Victoria Lucas...

And just like it is with "celebrity" deaths, her tragic end propelled her into the literary scene and gave her the recognition and fame that she desired in life. You know how it is, when someone famous dies, then all of a sudden, EVERYONE wants to buy his/her books, records, watch their movies, etc (John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Buckley, Heath Ledger, etc.). I wonder how her death would have been handled in today's era of instant news and gratification. In 1963, there was no email, Twitter, Facebook or texting, which would have magnified her tragic act to the zillionth degree.

One of my favorite poetry books, Ariel (her second), was published two years after her death. The poems are vivid, angry, achingly sad and triumphant. You could tell she had major "daddy" issues.

Kind of a morbid post eh? But I've been fascinated with Sylvia Plath since my high school and college days. Yes, I also wore a lot of black back then. One of her poems, "Sow" (from The Colossus) was on the AP English Literature test. We had to analyze that damn poem and write an essay on it. I probably bullshitted my essay but it was enough for me to pass minimally and earn two freshman English college credits. But back to the poem...I specifically remember the word, "brobdingnagian bulk" and found her imagery and use of words fascinating even if I didn't understand everything she wrote. The Colossus, another poetry book originally published in 1960 was re-released after her death.

There was a film, "Sylvia" that attempted to tell her story, but it was quite anemic at best and exploitative at worst. It starred Gwyneth Paltrow (whom I can't stand as an actress) as Sylvia Plath and a pre-James Bond Daniel Craig as her husband, the poet Ted Hughes.

On a lighter note, today was one of the many Senior Ditch Days. Since it's class of 2011 this year, I'm sure the kids will use any excuse to be out of school on the "11th" of any month.

On a more celebratory note, today also marks the day that Egyptian President/Dictator Hosni Mubarak finally stepped down from his 30 year rule after 18 days of tumultuous protests. Down with dictators!

Music Listography #4 - List 20 Albums...

It's the first Music Listography post of 2011 and the 4th so far! (That is actually my hand holding my book!)

Here's the topic folks...(Paul Frank pj's - mine)

My rules were: no Soundtracks, no Compilations or Greatest Hits, no "doubles" (same band can't be listed twice), and no "live" albums (those could be separate categories on their own!).

In no particular order:

Van Halen - Van Halen
Rush - Moving Pictures
Duran Duran - Rio
The Police - Regatta de Blanc
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Echo and the Bunnymen - Ocean Rain
Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
Guns 'n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
The Pretenders - Pretenders
The Cure - The Head on the Door
The Smiths - The Queen is Dead
The Beatles - Revolver
Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward
Eric Johnson - Tones
Def Leppard - High 'n Dry
Boston - Boston
Queen - A Night at the Opera
Prince - 1999
Joe Satriani - Surfing with the Alien
U2 - The Unforgettable Fire

As you can see, I tend to favor a lot of rock (classic and hard rock) as well as early to mid 80's rock/new wave. My tastes haven't changed all that much either...

This post would have been longer had I posted the album covers plus my snarky and rambling commentary but I just wanted this to be quite "Wham Bam, Thank you Ma'am!"...

Got any fave albums you'd like to share if you were leaving earth on a spaceship? I'd really love to know!

*(David Bowie reference)
