The Grossology exhibit was fun and definitely educational, but we were a little disappointed beause we were expecting a more expansive exhibit. We also saw the regular exhibits at the museum along with Grossology. Here's a cool link about everything you wanted to know about farts.
According to one of the exhibit placards about farts, which they call 'toots' (that sounds so lame!!!). I've recapped the more important parts: "When you pass gas, the skin around the anus vibrates... But not all toots sound the same." Then it goes on to say that some are high pitched and others are low-pitched. Why? It's because of vibrations. A tightened anus creates a higher-pitched fart. Just like a guitar string (I love that analogy), the tenser the anus muscles, the faster the anus vibrates. Blah blah blah...Finally, the more relaxed your anus muscles, the more lower pitched the sound.
Other exhibits that aren't pictured include a larger table sizedversion of "Operation", a demonstration lab (which was closed during our visit), a "Toot Toot" station where you made your own fart sounds by pressing your finger over different sized tubes with stretched rubber on top. There was also a test your Grossology Knowledge booth and a few others that I don't remember.
The "Sniff Sniff" exhibit was, by far, the most interesting one for me. It was truly interactive and the smells will haunt me forever. There are four stations, each with four choices.
Here are the choices. I apologize for the poor quality, the flash obscured the last button, which reads 'Foot'. There are four stations, each with a small rounded tube with a hole. Underneath, you squeeze a hose which releases an odor through the hole. You are supposed to guess which odor it is. There are also plastic domes with models of the specific types of bacteria (I forget the names and I didn't think of snapping photos of them) that harbor within those body parts.
You are to lower your head close to the mini rounded tube and squeeze the tube beneath, which releases a puff of the foul scentinto your nose . The odor then wafts into your nostrils while you either reel in disgust or leisurely ponder,"Hmmm, what the hell is that?"
If you can suppress your gag reflex, you press your guess. The button will light up green if you are correct; if not - red. (*SPOILER ALERT*) So from left to right, the answers were: ARMPIT, MOUTH, FOOT and ANUS! The armpit one wasn't too bad. I've smelled worse on people (not by choice). The mouth one wasn't so bad either. But the foot! Oh man!
Well, for me, the worst by far was the "ANUS"!!! I actually smelled that one first, not knowing what it was! It was fkn' gross! But then again, as a mom, I've changed diapers and have seen and smelled pretty much worse smells for the first few years of her life. Of course, I'm not immune to this, but that's only after eating something that doesn't agree with me!
You know some sadistic scientists had fun concocting these chemical facsimiles of ass, feet, and pits!
