Grinds and Vine Coffee Bar

How's this "stopped-at-the-light-roll-down-the-window-hurry-up-and-take-it" shot?  Thanks TC...

She does the dirty work when I'm driving, my child does...

While on the way to meet up with Cathy earlier this week, we took the LONG way to Mission Valley Mall, taking Texas St. from University Ave. I just wanted to get off the $%#@ freeway which was tied up with crappy traffic. Anyhow, as we were stopped at the light on Texas, I glanced to the right and saw a "coffee bar" sign...

Breakfast with TC @ Lil B's

Breakfast was once again enjoyed with TC...

as I braved crappy morning traffic to get over to North Park...

(photo from my "Return to Lil B's" post, March 2013)

The Turron & more from Azucar

With our breakfast from Perry's Cafe behind us, we headed over to OB...

where they were gearing up for their upcoming Oktoberfest...

It was still quite early in the morning .Early enough to score parking near our next destination, Azucar...

Perry's Cafe

The other day we went to Onami buffet in Mission Valley for my mom's birthday lunch. As we crossed the 5 off ramp to the 8, I saw Perry's Cafe below. It's one of those restaurants I've always looked at but never gone to...

The sloped roof and the old school look inside made me curious. The restaurant's kitchen had burned down several years ago but it was rebuilt and came back stronger than ever it seemed...

Dragonfruit from my parents

My parents started growing dragon fruit plants last summer but hardly any fruit was produced...

This year, their plants grew and multiplied like crazy and lo and behold...

Return to Miramar Cash & Carry + more flavors from Kwality Ice Cream

While our original plan was to try a new neveria down south, I suddenly realized that hey...we're near Mira Mesa...

aaaand both Bert and TC were with me...

Last stop for TORC's bday food crawl - Pavaraga

So our original first stop because our very last stop...

Once more we returned to the Bonita Paza strip mall for our second caffeine fix...

Almost the last stop - Caffe Bene

Not quite the last stop was a new Korean dessert cafe that opened a few months ago...

It's in this strip mall, with the old Korea House, now renamed Korea BBQ Blue House...

I don't remember what Caffe Bene replaced but it's a few steps away from neighboring RakiRaki in the next strip mall over...

TORC's birthday lunch @ The Purple Mint +Tokyo Central & Main

Our third stop was at the Purple Mint, the site of our actual lunch...

(photo from my "Return to the Purple Mint" post, July 2015)

which was only a few doors down from Donut Panic...

TORC's Frankendonut from Donut Panic

Our next stop was over in Grantville where my friends would have their first taste of vegan donuts...

at one of my favorite donut shops, the newly reopened Donut Panic...

TORC's Bday foodcrawl - Plan B: Cafe Moto + the Roaster Store in the back

Yesterday was a fun filled day spent in the company of my good friends, the Educator GF's...

these ladies are D, KD and TORC whose birthday we were celebrating with a foodcrawl organized by yours truly...

Lemonade, UTC

Last week, I was at UTC with my co-workers for a counselor luncheon at Seasons 52. This time, I wasn't here for a work related reason...

TC really wanted to try out the newest Lemonade eatery and since we were "up in the area"

La Jolla Coves & the Sunny Jim Cave

It was so nice of Bert to take a day off work...

Our day's outing took us to a community to which we rarely venture.

TC had on her fall break bucket list, 'visit La Jolla Coves' so that is where we went today...

La Michoacana + AmPm Freeze Drinks

After my aunt's service, we went to the reception at my cousin's house. She is considered my second cousin since her father is my dad's cousin (their fathers are brothers)...When her parents were first married and came to the United States, the first place they stayed was my parents' house. In fact, in my aunt's memorial slide show, there is a photo where I recognized our house's ornate gold framed mirror along with my mom next to my uncle and aunt. That photo was taken in 1984.

My aunt was taken too soon; she was only 57 and had been a nurse for over 30 years. Diagnosed with cancer in early August, she soon passed away before the end of that same month. It was very touching to hear all of the testimonials from her friends, co-workers and fellow choir members. Although I hadn't seen her in over 10 years, I will never forget her kindness and generosity. They always made special trips to San Diego and even went to our wedding twenty years ago.

It was already 102F when we left the lunch reception in Moreno Valley. We wanted to have an icy dessert before heading back to San Diego...

Kababayan Bakery

Kababayan Bakery, which houses the newly (soft) opened Snoice (Snow-Ice) is a Filipino bakery I hadn't yet explored...

It used to be known as Kababayan Oriental (I hate that word) Market and was located down South in Nestor until they relocated here in Spring Valley in the Fall of 2013...

Tostadas

So far I've been enjoying fall break...

especially since I get to spend quality time with TC...

Churros el Tigre, San Ysidro

Since we were in the area, I headed down Dairy Mart Road and hung a left at Camino de la Plaza. I wasn't sure if it would lead me to the outlets down south. While on the way, TC and I could see the hills of Tijuana...

I hadn't ever driven this stretch of road before to get to the outlet but luckily it led me to the right place. I wanted us to try a snack at this kiosk...

Fish Mart

Lunch today was at a place I'd seen before but never paid much attention to.

My hairstylist recommended it as well as my sister...

North Park Post Office Lofts

Earlier today, from THIS (circa 2013):

(photo from my "The Girl Can't Help It" post from May 2013)

on the corner of southwest corner of Grim and North Park Way...

Another Library yarn bombed! North Park Public Library

As TC and I walked along North Park Way, I admired the font...

gracing the side of the North Park Library. Right we we got to the corner, we both noticed the familiar cozy wrappings adorning the trees in front of the library...

Snoice (Snow & Ice)

Yesterday TC got a message from one of her classmates to check out her auntie's new dessert place...

It's diagonally across the street from Leocynn's Lumpia where we just had some Filipino grub...

and housed in Kababayan Bakery (new there since Fall 2013 when they relocated from the Nestor area)...

They offer two types of desserts here...

Leocynn's Lumpia - Four years later...

Has it really been that long since our last visit?

Four years have elapsed since then..

and it was high time we returned (albeit with another ulterior motive across the street)...

Return to Pavaraga Espresso Bar

After yesterday's crappy and slightly rainy weather, today was a big improvement.

TC and I headed out to the this tiny strip mall for a few drinks before heading out to lunch..

Stell Coffee & Tea Company

This past weekend we went to an area known collectively as "The Inland Empire"...

Unfortunately it was for a sad event, my aunt's memorial service (she was my dad's cousin's wife).

We left super early last week so we could have breakfast and coffee prior to the memorial service...

Because I like to look up places ahead of time, I figured we'd have our breakfast in nearby Redlands...

Coronado + Late date night dinner @ Tartine

We dropped off TC at the beach to meet up with her team mates...

They would be having a bonfire and TC really wanted to be there for "team bonding".

So off we went across one of San Diego's most iconic symbols, the Coronado Bridge which spans the bay and boasts spectacular views of downtown San Diego.  Incidentally the Coronado Bridge is also the same age as yours truly...

San Diego screening of documentary, "Delano Manongs"

Last night Bert and I attended the screening of the documentary, "Delano Manongs"...

which was held at the SD Central Library...

and was co-sponsored by Silayan Filipina and the Filipino National Historical Society, San Diego Chapter (of which Bert and I were charter members)...

Living Room Cafe @ The SD Central Library

Bert and I originally planned to have coffee at Bean Bar across the street from the SD Central Library...

Unfortunately, it was already closed by 5:30 pm, then I remembered that the library had a cafe there...

Twist Sandwiches & More

Needing to pick up TC in a few hours, Bert and I had lunch in nearby North park...

Bert didn't turn left at Florida so he had to make a U-turn past the Georgia Street Bridge...

so he could head back and hang a right on the corner of Florida St. and University...

The return of Donut Panic

After four whole months, Donut Panic is finally BACK!

An accident back in early May left their front windows and doors smashed. What is it with cars crashing into the storefronts here? This happened to Soup Plantation and a sushi place in the same strip mall...

Although their kitchen was working, the front part of the donut shop was under construction...

Izakaya Naruto

About two weeks ago, Bert and I wanted to have dinner at the new sushi place that replaced Kaga Sushi on the corner of Oxford and Third.

This is the same center that houses Utage and Hogetsu. Kaga Sushi had been there for years (please see Kirk's post listed at the end) and had closed down earlier this year.  When I saw the new yellow sign last month, I did a double take and I knew we had to go here eventually.

Unfortunately, we saw this sign...($%#@&!!!!!)

and made the mental note to return in several weeks.  That return happened to be today after picking up the teen from school...

Seasons 52, UTC

Ah yes...it's finally Fall Break!

Luckily I was able to leave work early, along with three other colleagues...

Patrick's of Bodega Bay

Westward about five miles was the town of Bodega Bay...

This was where Hitchcock filmed the scene where Tippy Hedren's character gets attacked by a seagull and she goes into The Tides restaurant (which is still there but looks completely different than it did decades ago in the movie)...It is a small town by the water.

TC's wish list included a candy store (it usually does whenever we travel) and Bodega Bay was no exception..

Miramar Cash & Carry + Kwality Ice Cream

My last stop for the day was on the way out, so why not check this place out..

a place that came highly recommended by Cathy...

Potter Schoolhouse, "The Birds" filming location

After our awesome lunch from the Marshall Store & Oyster Bar, we headed back out onto the scenic Hwy 1...

where more cows were seen grazing happily.

We were on our way to a small town in Sonoma County...
