Aaharn by Koon Thai, National City

Last year there was a short lived Ethiopian restaurant at the base of the Harbow View towers in National City...

We never got a chance to try Kebena when it was still around.  It has since been replaced...

Sometime back in May, I was in the area...

remembering Mary's post about this place (linked at the end), I knew I wanted to stop by Freddy's...

Return to the One-Ten liquor store

During Spring Break, I had some free time while TC was at sports practice...

On my way back to pick her up, I took the long way (no freeways involved) back and decided to go through National City.

I remembered this liquor store from last year after stopping on a whim with TC...

The best lemon cake ever! Little George's

Those who live in the South Bay will remember this fanciful storefront in National City...

(photo from my "A & D Hawaiian BBQ - National City" post, Nov. 2011)

The bakery had been on Highland Avenue since 1946 and sadly, closed in 2010...

The new 85C, National City

Another "late to the party" thing for me...

was the new'ish opening of 85C Bakery in National City.

It's diagonal across from Jollibee and next to a Mission Federal Credit Union...

There's a banh mi under here...

Last month Bert and I revisited Pho Mai Cali sice we were in the area...

This is the place with what Astroboi and I would call, the "groovy love beads".

It used to be the old Da Kine's in the 90's...

I had just picked up TC from a volunteer gig.  Nearby was a place we hadn't been to in awhile...

It was time for a revisit...

Glow mural @ the One-Ten Liquor Store next to the Palm Reader

On the way home from an outing with TC, we took the long way home to get away from traffic.

From the 5, I took the Main Street exit so I could get on National City Blvd where we passed by the iconic Palm Reader sign (in the 70's and 80's the sign had an eyeball on it instead of a planet)...

Villa Manila

The day after we got back from our vacation, Bert got word that a cousin was visiting. He hadn't seen him in more than 30 years and wanted to meet up.

The cousin and his family (wife and two daughters) had been to all of the tourist spots in San Diego (the Zoo, the SD Fair, Torrey Pines Glider Port, Seaport Village, and La Jolla Coves. Earlier that day, he spent time with Bert's brothers and sister at Cabrillo Monument and La Jolla.

For our "turn", his wife mentioned that she was missing Filipino food, so I thought we would try Villa Manila...

Chic-Boy

I must be directionally challenged because I thought this strip mall off the 805 and Plaza  Blvd had a new Thai bbq place but surprise, it didn't!

It turned out to be near East 8th St, dagnabbit.

Well, when life hands you lemons...

Porky's, the restaurant not the nasty 80's flick

Last month Bert and I were doing errands in between several events. His mother's 80th birthday was coming up and we wanted to check out this place for their lechon...

I found the name amusing, Porky's. As in Pig. NOT As in gross horny 80's sexploitation flick:

Those of you over 40 should get this reference. The rest of you, the trailer is posted at the end...

So, Porky's is in the same shopping center as Seafood City (National City location)....

IHOP, National City

Recently I was invited by a friend to present to her community group about funding for a local scholarhsip...

I agreed to do it and was off to the IHOP in National City to do my spiel...
