and more importantly, because there was NO LINE!
This place seemed to be pretty new...
In fact, they had their "soft opening" and from reading their tweets, their "Grand Opening" is coming soon (whenever that is). I staked out a table while Cathy went in to check out the goods. Info about Pie-Not on the window.
I went inside briefly to snap this shot and to also procure one of their oversized menus. They had a wide selection of pies, each with clever/punny "Aussie" names. Pies included both savory and sweet. We wanted a savory to share. The folks working here were super nice and very eager to help out customers. I'm surprised not more people were in here. This place had better offerings than Sidecar in my opinion.
And this is what we chose - the Sag roll. In looking at this menu again, the daisy & babe actually sounds good because of the inclusion of bacon. I liked the cute name (Daisy for the cow/beef and Babe for the pig/pork).
The "other half" of our breakfast - our Sag roll and our donuts (which were not yet consumed at the time).
The Sag Roll, a traditional Australian snack, along with a meat pie, which reminded me of the English sausage roll.
This was the perfect snack to tide us over 'til Pasadena. The puff pastry shell was so buttery, flaky, and crisp on the top. The meat filling was interesting to me. It was a mixture of ground beef and pork with finely minced carrots and onions. The texture was a bit soft becuase of the finely ground meat. It was delicious is what I'm trying to say.
As we left, the line for the donut place had grown exponentially for suckers willing to part with $20+ for half a dozen donuts and coffee. And don't forget a $1 extra for the box too, heh heh.
Having Pie-Not next to Sidecar made our little trip a little more worthwhile. It also gives us another reason to visit in the future so we can try their other offerings.

How do you manage to do a road trip and not get full?! I am still unable to get over that ANY place charges you $1 extra for a box!!

well, we only had one aussie pie here so our experience is a bit limited. ours was $3.50 too. but i thought it was worth more than paying $3 for a donut. at least there was a meat filling in our pie!
The summary so far is: Taiwanese (85C),Korean (Bon Epi), American (Sidecar) and Australian (Pie Not)...and such a pattern emerging. Epic. Road.Trip. It was nice to not have a tight schedule and starting out a bit early made all the difference. Faye- the Sag was really good and fresh (and so darn flaky!) and I think worth it.
Thanks for your input Cathy! Yes, it was an "international" tour of sorts, eh. I had to learn not to be so anal about time. I'm glad we didn't strangle each other by the end of the trip, ha ha. But seriously, it was so much fun!
hi kirbie - sorry this is a late response, nearly a year later. turns out your comment went to 'spam' and i just recently discovered that. anyhow, it's a place i think you would enjoy if you ever go back to sidecar doughnuts, you could also go to pie not next door.
