Wow Wow Waffle

I heard through the grapevine that a new waffle place had opened on 30th Street...

Where is it you wonder?  Well, look for the laundry place first then...

head down the driveway to the back where a garage has been converted to a "waffle lounge"...

TC and I loved the robin's egg blue color scheme throughout their decor (repurposed college lecture hall seats, rustic wooden tables and on their banner). We also liked the huge table on wheels under the canopy as well as another "hidden" seating area in the back featuring a new "Bunny Kitty"  painting by street artist Persue.

The attraction for me were the liege waffles in both sweet and savory versions.

The sliver of 30th St. as seen from our table. If you head out and turn left, you will come across Eddie's (which serves up Philly sandwiches) and kitty corner diagonally from that, Leftie's  Chicago Pizzeria. Just trying to give you some perspective where this place is.

As mentioned in my previous post, I was trying to save room for another savory item. Here were our items, the Candied Bacon with Avocado and a Chipotle Cheese (which was substituted for goat which I HATE) and TC's ice cream waffle sandwich (which really wasn't a sandwich).

She was given a choice of ice cream flavors - strawberry or mint chip as well as a choice between having one waffle cut in half with the ice cream inside, or a fresh made one with ice cream on top. She chose the latter. I found out later from the owner, Joseph Kraft, that the ice cream was from Trader Joe's but he was working on getting ice cream from Hawaii (I forgot the brand but it's not the same one that Hammond's uses, Tropical Dreams). I think it might be good if they used a local brand in my opinion.

Her waffle was thick, crisp, warm and lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. The ice cream was all right, but together the dessert was pretty good but proved to be a more formidable task for TC in finishing it. Despite my "help", several bite's worth were still left.

The bacon on my waffle was candied with brown sugar and tasted quite rich against the sweet waffle. The avocado and cheese shavings added extra richness to this savory treat. I could only manage a few bites and saved 3/4 of it for Bert to enjoy later (which he did).

I wish the waffle was not as sweet so that the flavors wouldn't clash with each other. Their website also mentioned a 'pizza waffle' but it was not listed on their board. I was hoping they would have smaller waffles as an option for "light" snacking, ha ha.

Mmm, melty goodness...

Service here was very friendly and attentive. Joseph  and his co-worker came out to serve us our waffles, offered us waters and came by later to ask us what we thought. They seemed sincere in wanting to know our opinions, as this was their "soft opening". In fact, they just opened a mere few days ago.

They are kind of hidden, but I'm sure they will get more buzz once they have their grand opening which is slated for July 4th (according to the Eater SD article). There was also a tiny bit of foot traffic off the street from pedestrians, including one lady who came in here because she saw someone walking along 30th with a strawberry lemonade and asked where he got it. Word of mouth in this area makes a difference, I suppose. Their waffles are already available at several farmr's markets as well as local coffee houses Subterranean down the street as well as the uber hipster Coffee Tea & Collective, where TC and I had a waffle a few months ago).

Postcards were available fo the taking on the sandwich board at the opening of the alley...

As of yesterday and today, there is only one Y*** review. Darlene also paid a visit yesterday and had the same savory waffle as I did (except she kept the goat cheese).  She also featured WWW in her latest Zagat writeup on 5 New Places to Eat this Weekend in San Diego.

Candice Woo also had a writeup on Eater SD:
"Waffles are coming to this laundromat in North Park", June 4, 2014.

While they haven't had their grand opening yet, they plan to do more revisions to the menu and finish up their patio area. The folks working here are super nice and I hope this place does well.

Update - I would also end up visiting it again the very next day (which was TODAY) with TORC. That post is forthcomong like a torrential onslaught of the squigs.

I have seen this place listed somewhere (probably Yelp) - I feel like they were just a cart before. They are in a pretty hidden little spot there! If they stay open late maybe they'd get more foot traffic from the bars/clubs around there. It looks cute and the waffles look good.

I believe they were at Farmers' Markets (I forget where). I like that they're hidden and yes they are open 'til 9 pm. Not totally late, but good enough to get a quick dessert after dinner in the area.
