TC was off doing several dance performances so we finally used my coupon for lunch...
Bert had heard about how great the short rib meat was from me, so he wanted that but in Torta form. Unfortunately, they burned a few pieces on the bread.

He couldn't get over how soft and tasty the meat was...

I had a few bites and I think I will have to try the short rib meat during a future visit (in taco form). By the way, the Caesar Salad here is quite good to!
As mentioned in a previous post, I wanted to try the Bone Marrow sopes, and I did!

The presentation was quite cool! There were three big ones perched atop three fried sopes, along with two types of salsa (one was hotter due to the habanero peppers within) and coarse salt. On top of the bone's opening was fried parsley. One bone held a thin utensil to scoop out the luscious bone marrow...

The one in the middle had the most marrow.

The rest, not so much.

Yes, quite fatty this was.

You gotta live a little, right? Not much for a full meal, since it was a tapa but enough to get by since Bert and I would be going to a church bazaar later that day.
Since we decided to go "whole hog", we wanted to try dessert:

While the Vanilla Ice Crea & Guayaba sounded good, we HAD to go with the Tijuana's Border Churros.
The presentation was quite lovely...

I thought the almonds were unnecessary though...

We both enjoyed dipping these freshly made churros into the hot chocolate and the caramel...

A few days later, which was today, I returned here with Mr. TJ, La Ley and another friend for a late lunch. The front end of the restaurant was filled so we were seated in the back near the bar.

There is now a closed off area here. Before, the walls were open. The new space, beyond the door is their new "Tapas Bar" which La Ley has been to before at night.

They must have been slammed for lunch or something because we waited over 35 minutes for our food. Our previous visits did not have delayed service so this was disappointing. Mr. TJ and our friend ordered the same thing as before, the short rib tacos (not pictured), while La Ley ordered the Gambas al Ajillo (also not pictured since it was already featured in a previous post, linked at the end). I wanted to try something new, so I chose the Taquitos de Papa "al Albanil".

The potato tacos were not as crisp as I had hoped but that was because they were covered with sauce.

The saucy tacos were eaten with a fork and knife rather than by hand since they were soft. I couldn't detect the chistorra flavor in here (chistorra is a type of Spanish sausage). The smear of guacamole, while artful, wasn't substantial. I know this is just a tapa and not meant to be a full meal, but I honestly didn't realize that our food would take that long.

That weekend Bert and I went to nearby Hans & Harry's. We wanted to check out the cake flavors for TC's upcoming promotion celebration.
Yikes! The prices have crept up steadily over the past few years. Back in 2008, the fruit strudel was $22.

My favorite heart shaped chocolate chunk tea cakes are now $6.25 instead of $3.99

We looked at the selections in the frozen cake case. Although I would have liked the Oregon Hazelnut or the Columbian Mocha, we had to find a flavor that would please everyone.

My brother requested anything except coconut (they have a great pineapple coconut cake in my opinion). We would ask TC later what she and her cousin would like...
I thought we would be able to "just look", check out the cakes and leave, but Bert wanted to get something here.

We ended up with two items, the Mini Chocolate Eclair ($1.50) for us and the Fresh Fruit Tartlet ($2.50) for TC.

I found out a few days later that the mini eclairs are only available on the weekends.

After TC's long day of performances and hanging out with the older dancers, she got to enjoy this little treat later that evening.

After work, I went to pick up the cake (TC decided on Black Forest), we picked these up:

A cream filled croissant topped with chocolate and a Strawberry Mousse slice...

Our next stops would be a visit to Balboa Park and a local church fair...

I have never tried bone marrow before... I think I'll have to try it. Sounds rich, but good. I forgot I also tried the churros here, I loved the presentation of their stuff. Bummer it took so long to get your tapas that one day. Must have been busier than they thought!
hi mary - it's kinda fatty. i like it in beef nillaga - the meat i use is beef shanks.
yeah, service was so slow that day. :(
Looks like good marrow. I usually get marrow bones for my Beef Bourguignon. The marrow roasts out into the sauce and makes it richer.
Hans and Harrys is a mainstay for me. Anytime there is a party or BBQ I come here. The last time I got the full strudel 3 ladies I was BBQing with finished it ALL. I barely had a taste. =P
The best bone was that first one in the middle - it had the most marrow! Now why couldn't they all be like that, haha.
Hans & Harry's is a community favorite. The price for their strudel is almost $30 now. Yikes!
