St. Charles Bazaar 2014

Another church bazaar, but this time, St. Charles. We go every year and there are the same but popular food booths like this one...

selling corn on the cob for $1.50 (can't beat that price), along with many tried and true faves...

like the Carne Asada tacos booth...

plus hamburgers, hot dogs, and fish tacos. Bert had a few of those the day before at the Bazaar and said the batter was a bit too thick, but still a good and fresh fist taco.

This booth has been here almost every year and Ana, the owner keeps outdoing herself. Of Spanish heritage (on her maternal side), she offers quite the variety..

as you can see by her menu choice.  We had our eye on the paella. A few years ago, she had chicken croquettes and tortilla Espanola. Not this year though.  I was surprised to see deep fried Oreos on the list!!!

There were sno-cones and halo-halo, a Filipino favorite.

If halo-halo isn't your thing, root beer floats were also popular...

along with nachos...

which we enjoyed. I didn't want too many  jalapenos though. Haha, you can see my old-@$$ phone in my purse pocket as well as my toes!

Remember this?

One of the craft booths was selling knick knacks, hair accessories and dolls of popular Mexican tv characters like Chilindrina ("freckles") and el Chapulin (the one with the CH on the chest; "chapulin " means "grasshopper"). He is a superhero who inspired Simpsons creator Matt Groenig to create "Bumble Bee Man". Whenever he would watch Spanish television, el Chapulin would be on!

La Ley's nephew dressed up at El Chapulin for Halloween last year. It's a Mexican thing, yeah!

The actor playing him is kinda old now, but the old reruns of the show are quite popular.

The Bumblebee Man on the Simpsons sports a different costume, obviously inpsired by the Killer Bees costumes from classic SNL (with John Belushi and Dan Akroyd).

Here's a link to the video of this classic sketch of the South American Killer Bees.

On the Simpson, Bumblebee Man usually says stuff like, "Ay ay ay! La Policia!" or some other phrases which use Spanish words.  In this snippet, he covers for Kent Brockman the news reporter in perfect English....For a few seconds at least, ha ha.

This snipper curiously had the Bumblebee man overdubbed on Spanish language tv.

Gotta love him!

Back to the food - our paella and (non-alcoholic) sangria from Ana's Spanish Kitchen booth...

This was quite the generous plate and had two large mussels, three shrimp (one quite large and with the head on, yay!), sliced boiled egg and chicken...

This was probably one of the best things we've had at the bazaar in years besides her croquettes and potato/egg tortillas. Loved it!

We all shared this funnel cake ($3 with powdered sugar only, more if you want more crap on it)...

It's not a bazaar or fair without some sort of deep fried treat, heh heh.

TC hung out with a fellow classmate and later got her face painted like a cat. Before we left, we got one of the fruit cups I saw many parishioners enjoying...

In the ice chest were precut spears of cucumber, jicama,a mango, pineapple and watermelon.

These cool and crisp fruits and vegetables were topped with a few squeezes of lemon juice, a sprinkling of Tajin and only a tiny bit of chamoy (my request since I don't like too much of it).

This fruit cup was very refreshing on this warm summer day!

Previous Bazaar visits that were actually blogged:
2007
2012
2013

We have gone every year since TC was born but haven't posted on it. As mentioned earlier, many of the food booths are the same and reflect the tastes of the parishioners. It was nice to see the Spanish food booth doing so well. Many kids were having a good time with the game booths while others were enjoying the entertainment. The day before, I missed the Neil Diamond impersonator! Bert said he got the crowd going with "Sweet Caroline" (haha). Until the next bazaar!
