St. Charles Bazaar

Today after the 10 o'clock mass, we went to the Spring Bazaar. For one thing, we wanted lunch!
Even though we don't live in this area, we still go to church here, St. Charles Parish in South San Diego (not quite IB). These photos were taken while we were on the Thomas the Train ride about the parking lots and church grounds! Fun! $1!!!

We did a few runs (photos not in order of purchase!). Bert a few items from here:
Bert ordered 2 extra carne asada tacos ($1.75 each). One was mine but I couldn't finish it. You'll see why as the post goes on: He got the combo plate for himself, 1 carne asada taco with rice & beans and lemonade ($4.50):
I actually was going to get carne asada's first, but got TC's food at the Fil-Am manned booth. While waiting in a long line for carne asada tacos, I noticed a booth (2 booths away) that had no one in line. Hmmm...that could be a good thing (no lines!) or a bad thing (crappy food). But wait, the sign said "European Cuisine" and offered paella (ooh!) and tapas! Had to see this for myself...
The squares on the left were Greek pastries (it had some crunchy noodlelike topping) over phyllo dough and walnuts. The round platter were Spanish omelettes with diced potato filling ($3.00 each). The teenage girls (sisters I believe) manning the booth told me their mother made all of the food. They were at the bazaar a couple of years ago but had different food offerings. I didn't recall ever seeing their booth before, but I'm glad they were herethis year because their food looked really good and was quite different from everything else. The girls told me that these were 'tapas' (they looked like croquettes to me). They even gave me a free sample; a generous half of one! It was delicious! Inside was a creamy chicken filling - they were priced at 6 for $3.50 and came with a side of potato salad.
They didn't mind that I took photos of all of their food. Their mother was quite happy that I was taking an interest and she described all of the items for me. This was flan:
These were cream puffs! I wanted to go back to get these but we were too full by the end of lunch!
Another type of flan:
I'm glad I read their sign more carefully. Initially, when I saw the red, white & green lettering, I immediately thought, "Oh, another Mexican food booth." Bleh, in San Diego, you can get Mexican food anywhere. Upon closer inspection of the sign and their booth's wide variety of offerings, I was glad I reconsidered my carne asada choice.
Before I left, I asked another worker (a teenage guy) what these were. He offered me a sample. They tasted like bunuelos. These were tortillas with a rice filling, fried and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. It was all right, but I'm not a cinammon fan.
This was actually our first stop. I got a plate for TC here. The combo plate was pancit, 3 lumpias with sweet & sour sauce with either a soda or water ($4.50). One of the ladies working the booth recognized me because she is friends with my mother in law...
Kinda boring (to me), but at least we knew TC would eat this. She couldn't finish it all and we didn't expect her to. Too bad we didn't bring a to-go box, we could have brought home our leftovers. I got a few comments on my food choice from the older Filipina lady next to us. She was wondering where I got the food and inquired about the items on my plate. She seemed interested in it but disappointed that she had already eaten her lunch, otherwise she said she would go to the booth and get some of what I had. I shared my omelette with Bert as well as the croquettes. TC had one too. I wasn't too crazy about the Greek pastry though. It had too much cinammon in it. Is that even a spice Greeks use? I found that kind of odd.
The side of potato salad. It was very creamy and had pimiento slivers, peas and eggs:
The croquete interior:
and the omelette, which I really liked. It could have used some spice in it, but it tasted fine just the same!
Here were the other standard food booths that are here year after year:
We planned on getting one of these before the bazaar, but after our big lunch (which we couldn't even finish), we opted to skip this and get a snow cone on the way out instead.
Bert's mom (not pictured) was working the Nachos booth along with some other ladies. Check out the big Philippines flag!

That's Bert's head up there! We were on the train ride!= heading back into the bazaar area. After that, TC played a few games, won a few prizes. We had our snow cones and left to do errands and head on home! A fun filled day!
