Return to Donut Stop

Like this shot? It's called a "not wanting to fully get out of my car" shot. Yeah. Well, we did return to this place after attending the literary event at Miramar College a few hours before.

It was already 9 pm and the donut joint would be closing in an hour.

I needed to see if they had what I was craving...

The elderly Asian man wasn't there, but the younger guy was. When I walked in, he said, "You're back", which was cool since he remembered me from earlier.

Well, the baker who came in at 8 pm really cranked out the donuts. There were fresh batches in the trays greeting us, especially the blueberry ones (top)! Plus the frosted blueberry on the bottom, next to his strawberry, orange and maple frosted friends.

On another rack, I spied some blueberry buttermilk bars, that Mary has had before.

We ended up getting half a dozen and picking at a few while instore.

Our only other company, besides the young guy working, were three older Caucasian dudes just shooting the breeze.

Our half dozen:

Two blueberry donuts, one blueberry frosted, one blueberry buttermilk bar, one chocolate old fashioned (Bert's), and for TC, a donut with sprinkles.

We attacked this first...

It was darker than the one offered by Crispy's.  I love love love the fried outer edges. That's was was picked off first until just a small piece of interior donut was left.

The frosted was just okay. Nothing too exciting. I guess I was just excited at seeing blueberry anything that night.

Yeah, fresh!

Previous visit to Donut Stop:
September 2013

Damn, their blueberry buttermilk bar is way better than the one at Crispy's but I am not going to make the 30 minute drive for that!

The blueberry donut was not as crisp as the version we had at Mel's Donuts or at Sunshine, but was still pretty good. The next day however, not so crisp.

Lastly, the frosted blueberry was just okay like the one from Peterson's Donut Corner. I don't think I'll get these again, as pretty as they look. I just don't like touching soft and gooey frosted donuts. Plus the inside is cake and I don't like it as much as the donuts with flavored batter.

At least I knew the blueberry donuts (in three permutations) were newly made and totally fresh! There is nothing worse than stale donuts and this place did not disappoint.

So. It seems 8 p.m. is the magic time of day for donut shops. I like Donut Stop; the donuts, the location and the random clientele.

hi cathy - yes, 8 pm! i agree this is a good location. next to some good restaurants in that strip mall and the one over. the folks working here are nice too. i'm so glad they don't have hipster prices. their donuts are .80. a tad bit cheaper than at crispy's (.85).

Oh! I'm happy to find out about this magical 8PM time. I really like their blueberry donuts here. At the Donut Stop in middle Mira Mesa (next to Fresh N Easy) they have blueberry donuts now, too. I thought they were good, too, but nothing you have to drive out of your way for. Their crullers are good though, I wish Donut Stop had crullers, man.
