Before she left, I asked her if she would bring me back some candy which, as you can see, she did...
I always find candy and snacks from other countries fascinating and this was no exception...
The packaging was thin and slim. Each piece of candy was rolled up and wrapped.

Melcochas are a popular candy in Costa Rica, made of raw sugar, molasses and in this version, coconut.

A tiny replica of the Costa Rica flag was also wrapped within the candy wrapper.

When opened, the candy was further wrapped in plastic and was a bit sticky to the touch.

Unwrapped, the candy is a dark brown and malleable. You can't just bite off a chunk easily. There's some firmness to this candy. I've seen some photos online where the candy is sliced but that doesn't seem as fun to eat, ha ha.

Here's my ragged bitten piece. You can kind of see the tiny bits of coconut within.

This candy reminded me of "coco jam", a type of Filipino spread made with molasses or raw sugar and coconut cream. If you've ever had molasses, this is what it tastes like, but tropical since there's coconut in there. The candy is not something you'd easily chow down as a sweet snack. You'd have to savor this since it's on the firmer side, a bit sticky, and intensely sweet. TC didn't really like it and Bert only had a tiny bite. It was cool that she remembered to bring back some candy especially something so specific to Costa Rica.

Oddly, when I clicked on the photos of the exact same product on their website, it was listed as "marshmallows"! I guess that's what they call this kind of candy in Costa Rica or maybe it was a bad translation of that type of candy? I'm not sure, but hey, you can buy this in a 6 pack or a 50 pack!
