Murals at the Redwood Laundrymat

Well, since we didn't get to see the "Viva Comics!" exhibit, I had another one up my sleeve for us to visit. We headed south on 30th, passing by this liquor store with a very cool retro sign...

It happened to be across the street from this...

a random laundrymat that was nearly covered with paintings on every wall...

When we passed it by, I drove for a couple of blocks and then made a quic U-turn so TC and I could see the art up close and personal...

Has that ever happened to you? You drive by something that catches your eye and you feel compelled to see it again? That's how I felt when we passed by the Redwood Laundrymat.

This was the back end of the building, covered with a graffiti design. The parking lot of the laundrymat also held a few surprises...

Namely this!   YESSS!!!! Prince!!!

This is what made me turn around and go back when I saw it in my rearview mirror! Holy#$%@!

But let's return to that back wall...I have no idea what it says but I like the use of color towards the bottom half.

Farther up is a howling wolf with a stack of buildings on its back. TC liked this portion of the mural the best. This is the south side of the building, facing Redwood St.

Just to the left of the wolf is another Bunny Kitty mural by Persue.

As you pass the front of the laundrymat and turn right into the empty parking lot, you are greet with this:

A bright pop of color along the perimeter of the lot and to your right, on the building are more paintings by a different artist.

See the car in the photo below? There was a photographer there doing a shoot with a tall long legged model wearing a micro dress. They had just finished up their session near the Prince painting which is why TC and I looked at the other side of the building first so they could finish up.

I wonder what magazine or publication those pictures will be in?

I'm not sure who or what Hasler Shark is (the artist?) but man, I love this painting of Prince!

I was so excited, I sent a photo of the wall to Astroboi, a big Prince fan (at least 80's era Prince).

Here is a photo for reference:

I can't believe Prince is over 50 years old! He still looks good for his age!

I didn't get any close ups of this last wall since the photographer was still there.  Didn't want him to turn around to see me snapping shots and consider me a creeper, which I'm not, ha ha. I'm not sure who the woman is in the mural either, but it's quite striking. The woman is the late British soul singer Amy Winehouse.

Graffiti alongside the east perimeter of the parking lot:

The very back wall...

and lastly, a gun-toting panda stenciled on the retaining wall.

Here's one last look at Prince. I'd post a video of him but I can't since Prince doesn't allow his videos on youTube. Boo.

However, if you wish, you can click on this video link, which takes you to a video of his Royal Purple Badness accepting the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for "Purple Rain" in 1985.
OMG, Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas were so young! Prince, who was accompanied the duo of Wendy and Lisa, still looks the same. Yeah, 80's fashions at it's peak of silliness!

Short video of street artist Dave Persue -
ArtPulse.TV - This is a repeat of the video from my "Return to South Park and Bunny Kitty mural" . The video features his works throughout various San Diego locales as well as a few fleeting images of the this location before it was painted.

I don't think I have the Bunny Kitty mural from North Park in my archive of snaps so I might need to do a revisit.
