In addition to homemade ice cream, they also offered coffee drinks, Hawaiian shaved ice, sundaes, and other types of baked goods...
The girls were here for one thing only...
Cow-a-bunga is owned by a French family; the father was a former chef for several major hotels in San Diego before he opened up this place in the mid 2000's.

Their ice cream flavors, homemade they may be, were more on the "mainstream" end. There was nothing too wierd here. Below, you can see their flavors on the board. It seemed like the same as the last time we went earlier this year.

Their sign is actually wrong. The lowest priced homemade ice cream in the San Diego area is Oasis. One scoop at Oasis will set you back $1.60. Wait, I stand corrected! Once scoop at Neveria Tocumbo (which makes their own ice creams, but not a micro ice creamery) is $1.59! But hey, I'm not gonna correct these folks. One scoop at Cow-a-bunga is $2.00.

The last time I was here I didn't get any ice cream but originally wanted the Mexican Chocolate. It was out that time but lo and behold, it was available during this visit...

The girls got the same thing while Bert chose one of his favorites...

TC's friend had the Rainbow Sherbet with Jelly Belly's on top. The woman made a depression with the scooper than added the jelly beans into the "nest".

TC, on the other hand didn't get the same treatment. Her jelly beans were poured in first and then put the scoop of ice cream on the top. We have no idea why she did it differently with TC. I liked the look of her friend's cup better.

And here are the adults' ice cream cups - my Mexican Chocolate and Bert's Pistachio.

The quartet of ice cream cups look quite nice...

The chocolate flavor wasn't too "chocolatey"; as you can see, it was a bit lighter in color. I wonder which brand of Mexican chocolate they used. I think they use Ibarra at Mariposa in Normal Heights.

Both of our flavors were creamy and delicious (not counting the sherbet).

I'm glad that there are little mom and pop shops like these. They had a lot of business that day and it was nice to see everyone enjoying themselves outside.
Previous visit to Cow-a-bunga:
March 2013
Our next stop would be across the street at an IB landmark...
