Happy Hour dinner and D's Nutz

Tired of eating leftovers at home and having "cabin fever", we ventured out last Friday night...

to the west side of Chula Vista. Gunco Ramen (which shares space with Kanpai) is on the corner of 3rd and Palomar and usually we just go straight on Palomar to get to the other side of CV. Sometime, I forget that the Palomar Street bridge that crosses the 805 is gone, like DEMOLISHED gone. It was part of the Darmaggedon plan that will build a direct access ramp, HOV and express lanes, and other freeway improvements.

It's also across the street from the notoriously named donut joint...but first, we were going to have some dinner...

The last time we went here it was TC's 13th birthday. We liked how low key it was but most of all, we liked their Happy Hour menu...

where everything is $3.95.

We started off with some seaweed salad (seaweed with mixed greens, tomatoes, and a sesame soy dressing.

I wanted to try the Shrimp with corn in a cream sauce.

To my delight, the appetizer also had mushrooms, which we loved!

Bert shared his baked mussels which  had a creamy and slightly spicy sauce.

Instead of my go-to favorite, the Chanpon, I tried the Hakata ramen for the first time. (Please note that this was not on the happy hour menu. I forgot the price but I think it was $6.99 or $7.99).

The broth is milky from boiled pork bones. The noodles had a good texture and chew. The toppings included green onions, pickled ginger, bamboo shooes, a couple of pork slices (with fat, yes!), and one fish cake slice. Pretty basic, but filling.

TC and Bert's sushi roll platter - salmon, tuna, hamachi

plus TC's California roll and Bert's Kanpachi.

The happy hour rolls are small and not fancy. Unfortunately TC threw up in a big way later that evening. We think it might have been the fish. Poo.

Now here is the view of the stripmall across the street, where we planned to revisit D's Nuts...

I mean KD's Donuts...

See the sign outside the window? That Mexican eatery is now defunct. Bummer. I would have wanted to try it out.

I see that the 70's style wood panels and the faded shellacked puzzles are still there. TC really liked the plastic seating. Very Brady Bunch looking.

We each chose one donut ($1 each/more expensive than my recent favorite, our local "Crispy's", which are .85 each) - TC's sugar twist, Bert's maple bar and my maple buttermilk bar.

These were kind of heavy and not as crisp and fresh as the one's from Crispy's.  Bert's maple bar was all right and so was the twist but overall, these weren't that great.

They did not have any blueberry items here except for muffins, which I don't like.  I'm currently obsessed with blueberry if you haven't figured it out from previous posts.

Previous visit to Gunco Ramen:
August 2013 - for TC's 13th birthday (this post lists all other previous visits)

D's Nuts also had French crullers but I remember not liking the one I had a couple of years ago. After having had the crullers at Mary's, all other crullers pale in comparison suck ballz. It would be like cheating on Mary's by having D's Nuts inferior version.

Happy hour dinner! Yes! I've tried to do that in past to save money but always have hard time finding restaurants that have a variety of stuff for HH.

I'm sorry to hear that TC threw up after dinner :( OMG - that musta been horrible. Hope she's better now

hi faye - yeah, i thought, why not do this! everything was $3.95 except for the ramen so I need to go back and fix that.

tc felt better afterwards. thanks for asking. i felt so bad for her, having to hold her hair (she has super long hair) while she did her thing. :(

I love doing Happy Hour for dinner sometimes - you feel like you can just try a whole bunch of stuff!

Aw, poor TC! That is never fun for anyone :( Glad at least it made her feel better.
