Wildberries Marketplace + taxidermy @ the McKinleyville Barbershop

We needed to buy a few items for our lunch for today. As always, we had a lot of driving ("we" as in Bert).

(yes, fireworks are legal here!)

TC was happy because she got to ride in the front seat.  Near Northtown Coffee was this health food/grocery store, Wildberries Marketplace...

The store itself looked like it was from the mid-60's with that peaked roof and big windows. Reminds me of the old Safeways and Alpha  Betas.

A van in their parking lot advertising Lost Coast Roast, a coffee roaster from Arcata.

We bought cheese (Rumiano, which is local to Crescent City), some salami, crackers, water, and local coffee to give as gifts.

I thought that the lone Celosia bloom was pretty...

Below, a selection of local coffees, most notably Kinetic Coffee which, like Lost Coast Roast, also hails from Arcata. I liked the gears as graphics on the bags.

More info about the company here (taken from their website):

"Kinetic Koffee Company is a gourmet micro roaster, located in Arcata, California, in Humboldt County, surrounded by Redwood forests, raging rivers, and the Pacific Ocean. We specialize in super-premium, certified organic coffees from around the world. Each of our roasts is custom designed with distinctive profiles.
Kinetic Koffee is a firm believer in the "Think Globally, Act Locally" philosophy...

So, what does the "Kinetic" in Kinetic Koffee mean? The definition of "kinetic" is "energetic or dynamic" or "resulting from motion." To us, it's all about human powered activity, whether it's cycling, paddling, skiing or any other active sport. Participation in these activities demands enormous amounts of energy, stamina, dedication, and caffeine. As outdoor enthusiasts ourselves, we share and celebrate these attributes.

Another influence was the Great Arcata to Ferndale World Championship Cross-Country Kinetic Sculpture Race, a Humboldt County Memorial Day weekend tradition for 40 years. Amazing human powered pieces of art are pedaled over roads, sand, mud and even water for three days, traversing the 42 miles between Arcata and Ferndale. The founders of Kinetic Koffee Company have been a part of the original race for years, and initially offered fresh roasted coffee as a fund raiser for this non-profit event.

The founding principals are former executives from the outdoor and cycling industries and have spent the past few years learning all they could about the world of super-premium coffees. They bring their knowledge and passion for the noble bean to you, the coffee aficionado."

I couldn't resist picking up this flyer featuring Bigfoot!

A few miles up from Arcata is the town of McKinleyville, which was named after Pres. McKinlehy after he was assassinated in 1901.

Now what were we doing here? Well, in this parking lot is a roadside oddity (which will be a separate post). An added bonus when we were checking out that particular attraction was finding the McKinleyville Barbershop by default.

The barbershop was closed but a quick peek at the windows led into a double and triple take. Good gosh, there's like a whole forest full of stuffed wild animals in there and I don't mean the cute cuddly kind either.

There was even a bear behind glass, underneath the military hats.

Damn!

There is no website but here are the reviews from yelp.  I don't think there are any barber shops in San Diego that can boast the presence of taxidermied animals! I don't know how I'd feel with a bear watching me with it's fake glassy eyes or a whole row of Bambi's father's heads, ha ha.

Now just a few steps away from this interesting barber shop is a quirky attraction. That post coming right up!
