Shine Drive Thru Tree

Trees, trees. and more trees...

Especially this particular tree that you could drive your car through....

The Shine Drive Thru Tree is in the town of Myers Flat, part of the scenic drive through the Avenue of the Giants.

For $6 a car, you can do this rather touristy/tacky thing and drive your car through the base of the tree.  This roadside attraction has been here for many decades.  Apparently, folks trying to promote California back then thought it would be a "good idea" to cut a tunnel through a living tree (not ethical now, eh) so that travelers could have a cool photo opportunity.  There are three trees of this type in California and yes, we did all of them. This was the first.

Luckily it was not crowded when we went. We waited 'til the car before us was done driving through, taking photos in front of their car and all before we did it ourselves.

Info about the tree. It's unbelievable that the tree is 3,000 years old!

I got out of the car to "record the moment"...

These trees are so massive!

Here is California Through My Lens blogger Josh's post detailing his visit to the Shine Drive Thru Tree (he has much better pictures than I do).

Reviews from trip advisor and that four lettered site

We would be making a few stops along the way through the Avenue of the Giants. So far, it was pretty amazing seeing such majestic trees, many over 2,000 years old...
