It's not often that you see a super tall totem pole in the parking lot of a Safeway, eh...
But that is precisely why we were here...
After seeing the dead animal awesomeness of the McKinleyville Barbershop, we proceeded to check out the "World's Tallest Totem Pole", as they bill themselves.

I apologize for the lackluster photos. You can't really see the detail due to the lighting and lack of high resolution on my camera phone, but you can see how tall this thing is.

It weighs over 57,000 lbs, the base weighs 214,000 lbs and it stands 160 feet tall. It was carved in 1962

I couldn't even get the whole thing into the camera frame.

The colors are much more brilliant in person.

I first saw this quirky attraction in Josh's post, Eureka to Crescent City & Oregon State line: Roadtrip guide" Jan. 3, 2016
Thus, being an admirer of quirky roadside oddities, knew we had to see this, even if only for ten minutes.

Now we can cross this off our list! On a related note, here is a link to another tall totem pole that we saw during our Oregon 2012 trip; it also calls itself the World's Tallest.
Our next stop would be a very pretty seaside town where we would have our lunch break...
