which meant that Bert and I had a free late morning/early afternoon...

so off we went to check out Coop's new fried chicken place in Lemon Grove...
I had an online coupon actually (thank you ibirthdayclub.com) which gave us $5 off a purchase of $20. After reading Kirbie and Mary's previous posts (linked at the end), I figured, "Hell yeah, I'm going to use this", especially after finding out that Coop's won a recent fried chicken competition.

As you can see, the clouds were dark and gray with promises of rain within. Da Chicken Coop is right across from our favorite bbq place in San Diego, Coop's West Texas BBQ. Apparently, Da Chicken Coop used to be a taco shop but once it vacated, Coop's owner Bradrick Cooper saw it as an opportunity to offer his fried chicken and fish.

There 's quite a bit of outdoor seating which I'm sure would be enjoyed in less inclement weather. We got there right when they opened (11 am); after taking our order, the lady told us it would be a 15 minute wait. It ended up being almost 30 minutes but that was fine with us.
We sat at one of the tables and watched the folks in the parking lot next door stand on the edge of the street waving signs for the late Cinco de Mayo festival. Across the street was the trolley line as well; at one point, the conductor gave a friendly honk when one of the church women waved to the trolley.

I didn't attempt to take a menu photo on their glass window (too much glare) so here is a much nicer look courtesy of the internet. For the record, we got the 3 piece wings with waffle and the Fish Po Boy ($5 off made our meal $18.35 total, excluding tip). I have to say, the folks working here sure are nice. The owner even came out to greet customers and came back later asking all of us how are meal was. He is so friendly and warm and I'm so glad to see that he is enjoying success with two restaurants (sadly, his BBQ place in CV didn't last long and that was the closest eatery to us too).

(from the SanDiegoVille article, linked below)
That Po Boy was fully packed. The choice of fish was either Swai or Pollock; we went with the latter because it was the preference of the lady who rang us up. The condiments were ketchup, hot sauce and for the waffle, maple syrup.

Fried pollock, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, mayo and full of goodness. This was such a big sandwich. The other half would be saved for later.

The fried WANGS and waffle underneath, soaking up the juices.

While not overly crisp, I liked the texture of this waffle. It was not super soft and soggy but more springy if that makes sense. It was fun to eat piece by piece and dip into the maple syrup container.

The wings had a wonderful battered with herbs in it. It wasn't an overly thick battered crust like KFC's but it really was flavorful. The meat itself was very juicy; not dried out at all. Thumbs up for this or shall I say, devil horn salute in affirmative appreciation!

On our way back to the 94 to get back to CV...

Crazy weather we've been having eh? From a heatwave last week to stormy nights. Below, a view of Mt. Miguel, obscured by low clouds while passing Spring Valley on the 125 (we love our FastPass).

Back to the 805 heading south to pick up TC. In the distance, the Palomar Street DAR (direct access ramp) is nearing completion. The city demolished the bridge the summer of 2014. Hopefully it will be finished soon.

No trace of blue skies as we headed home after picking up TC in IB. This view is on the 905 heading to the 805 exit.

We didn't get any sides and opted not to get fries with our sandwich (more fried shit = not so fun bathroom time later on). This is a place you go to where you don't expect to eat anything healthy. Let's not kid ourselves here. I'm not into coleslaw (one of the few non-fried items on the menu); the other vegetable items were fried okra (ooh, maybe next time) and green salad, but why bother right. I still have a $5 off coupon for Coop's BBQ place to use for the future so when that day rolls around, we'll make our way back here again and try the dark meat chicken (and that waffle again). Health food this ain't but man, was it good!

Hi Lynn,
Try looking for Da Chicken Coop on the ibirthdayclub site again. You have to specify which restaurant you want to receive deals from.
