Thanksgiving 2014

It was so nice getting this card in the mail earlier this week...

I have such a thoughtful hairstylist who is "old school" in that she loves to send cards for all of the major holidays. I like that and who doesn't love getting something nice in the mail?

This year, Thanksgiving was once again spent at my parents' house...

because they like hosting and preparing all that food for us. I brought a dessert while my sister made pancit palabok. I don't remember what my brother brought...

While the rest of the country is freezing their @$$e$ off, we enjoyed 80+ weather...

This is the view of Heritage Road heading south, approaching the Olympic Parkway intersection.  Back in the 80's and up to the late 90's, this was all a huge ranch with cows galore. This area is now developed and called Otay Ranch.

The spread at my parents - turkey, cranberry (both canned and homemade compote; I was proud that my dad made that), potato salad, mashed potatoes, gravy...along with ham, sweet and sour meatballs, chicken curry, Krab salad,  and some sort of beef dish...

Let the carving begin...

Love my dad's latex gloves.

Fish with black bean sauce brought by a my dad's oldest brother...

Bulalo (beef shank soup) made by my cousin's wife. If you can't tell, this was a huge pot filled with delicious soup, napa cabbage, bok choy and beef shank bones and meat.

Marrow on my fork....yes! I love this soup, bulalo.

The dessert and snacks table: homemade hopia, assorted fruits and uh, Fritos...No pumpkin pie, but Fritos corn chips. Go figure.

along with Cheeto puffs (hmmm, this was a first), pistachios, cashews, Rianne's frosting-less rainbow cupcakes (purple on top this time) and my blueberry mochi cake...

as well as Filipino fruit salad (canned fruit cocktail with cream and coconut)...

Sorry, no corners this time...

People seemed to like this. All I know is I didn't want to take home any leftovers of this.

Later that evening, making turkey soup out of the carcass...

The kids had a great time playing in the back yard.  Nephew #1 already submitted his college applications. Nephew #2 is doing well in marching band while #3 had a successful first season in track (this is the self-taught Rubik's cube whiz, ukelele player and macaron obsessed nephew).

We also met my nephew (or more properly, my second cousin whose mom is my first cousin on my dad's side) for the first time. He drove down from Napa Valley where he is attending the Culinary Institute of America. Apparently, his CIA ID  is good for free wine tastings at certain wineries.  Well now...looks like we need to visit HIM soon! He has about another year of school left, ha ha. But really, it was nice to meet him, a very respectful young man of 23.  My older nephews (who work at 85c) were also there. The oldest one came later after his shift and unfortunately, we missed the buns he brought from the bakery, dagnabbit, but we still enjoyed the beef bulalo their mom made.

Last year's Thanksgiving:
2013

I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving!

The spread looks great. That sucks that you missed out on the 85c buns though!

That turkey looks HUGE! How big was it? Your blueberry mochi cake looks delicious. I'll need to search for the recipe. I'd much rather have that mochi cake than a pumpkin pie.

Kirbie - There was a quite an array of food there...about the buns, well, there is still our xmas party that the nephews will go to, haha.

Faye - Yes, it was sizeable. I'm not sure how many pounds it was. Maybe abou 20, but no more than 25. Thanks re: blueberry mochi cake. The recipe is on my blog, just type it in the search bar on the upper left corner and it should pop up. I like making this for parties. Definitely way better than pumpkin pie which equals barf.
