Recently enjoyed..the random food edition

It's been awhile since I did a random post...

this one will just be food instead of scenery or signs...

The above are roasted red potatoes which were quite easy to put together. Just a little olive oil, salt and pepper and heat. Can't forget that. Tastes so good with sour cream or in TC's case, ketchup.

Late September, Darlene texted that she tried a sample of a Danish Kringle at Trader Joe's. Cathy of mmm-yoso bought one and out of sheer curiosity, so did it. I've had a real Kringle before, but not this flavor. This was actually a stretch for me because it was pumpkin flavor...pumpkin caramel to be more exact.

This was only $6.99 and a total bargain. If you order this online from the company, it would be aout $20. Yikes.  The guy working there told me that they would start getting the almond ones during the holidays.  Did I like this?  Yes and no. I liked the flakiness of the pastry and the caramel icing with nuts, but it was super super sweet. If you eat a bigass piece, it would be overkill unless you have a major sweet tooth. Best to go with a thin sliver to start off with.  Bert liked the flavor more than I did. The pumpkin just doesn't thrill me but I wanted to try some Kringle again despite the flavor.

After waiting patiently for about a month and a half, I finally saw this at Trader Joe's...

ALMOND!

It had to be mine, along with a bag of red spinach, bought out of curiosity as well. It was interesting how groups of leaves were attached to a main stem, unlike  the typical bagged green spinach which are just separate leaves.

Aaaah, much much better than that horrid pumpkin!   I loved this so much more. I ended up slicing the kringle and dividing it into plastic ware. One to enjoy and one to freeze. Let's just say that the ones set aside to be frozen didn't stay frozen long. The Kringle was a hit with both Bert and TC...

One of my recent go-to sides, bamboo shoots with ginger, bok choy and oyster sauce...

This corned beef hash was made by Bert on Halloween with leftover enjoyed the next day with rice and eggs.

A personal sized grilled fish bought at Seafood City a week or so ago when I didn't feel like cooking...

When in doubt, roast! These beautiful cauliflower heads were found at Effing Easy...

This was a blueberry flavored beer that Bert found at BevMo a few months ago.

We finally drank it and I liked it more than he did. I would totally get this again, ha ha.

From Sprouts, Dirty Potato Chips Funky Fusion flavor which had everything under the sun in there. Its' hard to describe but the chips had a lot of flavor going on. I also bought a couple of new coffee products, a bottled Stumptown cold brew (Stumptown is a Portland, OR coffee shop) and Blue Bottle iced coffee (Blue Bottle is from SF)

I liked the coffees better than the chips. Of the two coffees, I prefered the Blue Bottle New Orleans style (chicory) much better than the cold brew. The former was already sweetened while the latter was not.

Marinated chicken thighs with teriyaki sauce, garlic, and pineapple juice/chunks.

Made during one of my marathon cooking days on a weekend.

Last month, at a party...kale salad, chicken adobo, and vegetarian pancit bihon (which had tofu), along with that party favorite, lumpia.

For the PASACAT Extravaganza afterparty....chicken adobo and fish sisig enjoyed in the wee hours of the morning...

This adobo was ordered from a Filipino restaurant (I want to say Zarlito's but I could be wrong) tasted a bit strange. It had a bit of five-spice flavor  which I did NOT like in this dish. Plus, this adobo was too soupy for my liking. Me no like sauce in adobo.

Another dish that was enjoyed (by others, just not by me) was this preserved salted egg dish with chopped tomatoes. This was one of the worst things I've tasted. I know it's supposed to be salty, but this was terribly salty, mouth puckering, chug a gallon of water right away salty.

Lovely fish sisig...

One of the dancer's girlfriend brought this from Hawaii, gummy candies with Li Hing power on it! This was pretty good, I must say.

At a recent volunteer event, Filipino food was served to all (rice, adobo, pancit and lumpia)...

This chicken adobo tasted much better than that five spice powder version.

From Effing Easy, one of my favorites. I like it better when  it's marked down (this wasn't). Sometimes I don't even feel like waiting to toast this and just eat it cold. The waffle has big chunks of pearl sugar in it which I really like.

One of TC's favorite breakasts, my egg/tomatoes and onions with hashbrowns...

Here is another cold brew coffee found at Effing Easy, this time with Almond Milk. I didn't like this as much as the Blue Bottle version. This tasted too milky for me.

Also found at the same store, multicolored carrots (cheaper here than at Sprouts actually, about $2 instead of clost to $3)...I was excited because there were purple carrots in that bag!

which have a lovely yellow center...

Bok choy once again, with ginger, oyster sauce and garlic...

Plus bacon, a treat for all of us...the fat was saved for a future use!

I made this soup a couple of times last month when TC was sick. I simmered the carcass of a Costco rotisserie chicken along with some carrots, onions and celery. I boosted the flavor a bit with some roasted chicken base as well. I threw in some macaroni elbow pasta and potato chunks toward the end, along with some frozen corn. Celery leaves were used as garnish along with some cream to give the soup some thickness. After the bones were discarded, I added the chopped chicken breast from that same rotisserie chicken and let it warm through. Perfect for a sick day.

Fall is really upon us now. There is a tiny bit of a chill in the air and I feel it's probably time to finally get my sweaters of of their storage bins...

OMG, thanks for letting me know about the almond kringle. I've bought 3 of them since reading your post. They are SO good!! My sister-in-law says they taste like the ones she ate when she was in Denmark. Yum.

Great randomness! One thing I thought to do with the pumpkin kringle would be to freeze to use as a different kind of Thanksgiving dessert. Never thought of fish sisig, and that sounds great!

hi caroline, you're welcome and thank you for visiting and reading the blog! i have only bought one almond kringle (so far, heheh). i may get another one (or two) tonight - freeze 'em and bring 'em to the family thanksgiving lunch. man, at $6.99 each, they are indeed a bargain.

cathy - thank you! i aim to please, haa. we still have some of the pumpkin caramel one. the almond is so much better.

as for the fish sisig, it had the same seasonings as the pork, but none of the fatty and crispy goodness. :(

I want to try the blue bottle coffee! I don't like that almond milk coffee, either. It didn't really taste much like coffee at all. I don't think I really like almond milk either.

It's pretty good, that Blue Bottle...I only drink almond milk with my protein powder but not as an add in to coffee.
