Farewell to the Ice Cream Man @ Mariposa

Last week I got a sad text from Cathy of mmm-yoso.

Mr. Dick Van Ransom-Magana, owner of Mariposa Ice Cream in Normal Heights had passed away...

He was involved in a car accident  on June 1 and died from his injuries on June 3rd.  I was shocked to hear this as TC and I were recently at the shop. He was always there with his wife, was quite friendly and also super nice to all of his customers.

Since Astroboi and I were out and about earlier today, I asked him if we could go there after checking out the Adams Avenue Bookstore and Back from Tomboctou.  We saw a father and his young daughter stop in front of the store, peer through the window briefly, and then leave.

In the window was this wreath. Notice the waffle cones with carnations as "scoops":

A block away at the Discount Fabric store's marquee was this message:

The store was closed

Here are some "Throwback" scoop photos...

In going through my old post, I saw that I had a photo with Mr. Van Ransom in it (he's in the cap)...

What I really like about Mariposa besides the outstanding homemade ice cream and their selection of great flavors, is their laid back ambiance (there is a plethora of Beatles and 60's/70's memorabilia in there) and their commitment to the local community.

Last visit to Mariposa
April 2016

Our first visit
October 2010

If you haven't gone here before, I highly recommend a visit. This shop is one of San Diego's best featuring homemade ice cream.   Have a scoop (or two) in tribute to the Ice Cream Man.

That's quite sad. I first visited back in 2005 and have been back a couple of times over the years.

Yes it is quite sad. Life is fleeting.

I read about this, so sad to hear. What a loss for the community! I remember visiting a long time ago and enjoying the different flavors of ice cream.

This is really sad not just for his wife but for the community.
