Spring Break Road Trip 2016 - Day 1: On our way up & lunch at Mr. Pickle's Sandwich Shop, San Rafael

It's time to finally start churning out this year's Spring Break road trip posts...

where we left in the dead of night to do our roadtrip up to the Sonoma area...

We enjoyed snacks along the way...this was somewhere up the 5.

Getting closer. on the 580.we were making good time especially since we left so %$#& early.

On the 80 near Berkeley (this is the bike bridge near University Ave (first posted on these protester statues here and here)...

Crossing the Richmond Bridge - it helps to have the FastPass transponder.  No having to wait in a longass line like the other suckers.

At the northern end of the bridge is San Quentin! They actually have a gift shop but unfortunately we didn't have time for that today.

Our lunch stop was in the the North Bay town of San Rafael. In a mixed use business complex was Mr. Pickles's Sandwiches, a popular sandwich chain in the Bay Area and part of Northern and Central California.

This chain was on our list for our summer road trip last year but it was not to be until today.

Yes please, except for the mustard.

You have to love all of the pickle imagery!

Our lunch that day included two full sandwiches (Reuben for Bert, vegetarian for TC) and a half sandwich for me (turkey with Monterey cheese). All of our orders came with chocolate chip cookies, which was a nice touch.

Bert enjoyed his Reuben, overflowing with sauerkraut. His sandwich was toasted and packed with flavor.

As for TC's...it was a slice of American cheese with vegetables.

My half sandwich on Dutch Crunch bread, which is all over the place up here but is hardly ever found in San Diego at all.

My bread had that satisfying crunch and unique texture.  The portion was just right, the half sandwich. I was saving some room for some pastries from next door (post is forthcoming).

Here's a commercial we won't see in San Diego:

I always like killing two or sometimes even three birds in one stone. In this case it was two and the place in question was a Bay Area bakery just a few doors away...
