The Milk Bar + coffee from Streetcar, 2nd dessert @ Mariposa & more...

During Spring break I took TC and  friend out to lunch and dessert. Lunch was pretty basic (sushi at Junz). TC had been wanting to go to this new place ever since reading "Ms. Darlene's" Zagat article about flavored milks.

Then when we saw photos from "Ms. Kirbie" and "Ms. Mary", we HAD to go...

Milk Bar is sandwiched between Chito's Shoe Repair and Streetcar Merchants(they shortened their pretentious name I see, dropping the "of Fried Chicken, Doughnuts and Coffee, WTF right). In fact, they are connected to Streetcar and if you buy something from the Milk Bar, you can enjoy your milk and/or cookies at Streetcar.

Lactose intolerant me skipped out on the milk. The girls each chose a milk and shared a cookie (cookies and cream); of course, the one cookie I wanted, the flavor placard was missing.

I found the inclusion of Billy Idol quite humorous. This was the guy I used to have a big crush on in junior high!  The quote below is bastardized from "Rebel Yell" replacing the word "more" with milk".

To refresh your memory or to introduce you to it if you didn't know it before:

"More! More! More!"

OMG, memories just watching Billy Idol sneer and posture wildly in that video! I felt like I was in high school again, ha ha!  But holy shit, Billy Idol is now 60 years old! Billy is a SENIOR CITIZEN!

Their milk flavor selections were rather sparse the day of our visit.

Great pop of color in the ceiling made even quirkier with clocks, clocks, and more clocks.

TC's strawberry milk and her friend's Peaches and Cream.

My mystery flavor cookie (it was chocolate based with walnuts and what looked like melted marshmallows that caramelized; I could be wrong but man, even the girl working there couldn't name this flavor).

The girls' cookies and cream. Both cookies as you can see were of the gigantor variety (they better be if they cosgt $3). We could only manage a few bites before calling it quits. The girls' cookie was on the more crisp side while mine was easier to piece by hand.

I needed to have some coffee so rather than having to walk to Dark Horse, Cafe Moto or Holsem, I ended up getting an iced coffee here (featuring beans from Intelligentsia).

With milk and sugar...

While here, I was recognized by a former student who was also there with his older brother (also a former student). To make things even more interesting, I found out that TC's friend's mom was a student from my school (she graduated two decades ago) and also she was not my student (not in my alpha), I remembered who she was (and she also remembered me; TC's friend texted her mom about me, ha ha). What a small world this is!

The view from our table outside, diagonally across was the new location of Crazee Burger. The old location, was torn down and now a three story building is taking shape. Not even a few months ago, they were beginning construction. Things move fast here in North Park it seems.

On a sad note, we found out that Santos Market (located behind the new Crazee Burger and next to the La Boheme condos) was now CLOSED as in kaput, out of business, and empty inside.

TC was looking forward to buying cheap Mexican candy there. I missed the kind Mexican man who owned the place and sold homemade salsa.

I parked in a two hour spot and time was a tickin' away. Before heading out, the teens wanted to look around at Pigment, a store, which has, admittedly beautiful and frou frou decor, jewelry, books, plants, etc. But the prices, yikes....$80 for a glass globe that you can suspend from your ceiling and fill with trendy succulents, candy colored moss and/or sand and even tiny figurines.  I don't have money to burn for that yo'.  It is a cute store to look around but wow, it's pricy in here.

These mugs were amusing...

We also went to our favorite bookstore, Adams Avenue where I had an encounter with Bart the bookstore cat. Everything that happened to TC, also happened to me during this visit. He meowed at me as I sat reading a book, saw that my lap was clear, jumped on me and started to vigorously knead my thigh first, then my stomach (sorry, no photos of that will be posted here, ha ha) and then placed his paws at the top of my chest, leaned back and stared at me. He got comfortable with his kneading and was purring quite loudly.  It was so funny because I've never had a cat do this to me before.

He wants attention.

NOW.

While on the way to the Back from Tomboctou store, we saw a trio of painters working on a mural. A few days later my friend and her daughter were here and their pictures of the same mural showed progress! I want to see it when it is complete. I'm sure it will look awesome.

The store with the pentagram on the window is Botanic Mama Roots. The girls were brave enough to go in while I waited outside.

They told me it had a lot of candles in it and smelled like incense.

A scoop of ice cream (for the girls only) was enjoyed here:

RIP George Martin, the Beatles' former producer...

He helped shape the Beatles sound and took them in further directions due to his musical expertise. For example, the song "Penny Lane"  includes a coronet solo played by George Martin.

In the song, "In My Life", he contributed the musical bridge, which was the harpsichord solo.

They've included a few new political stickers...

For the smalls, you can include two flavors. TC's was cookies and cream with strawberry. Her friend just stuck to one flavor, the blueberry.

Their prices also went up for their scoops. It's now over $3; it used to be $2.

TC and her friend really enjoyed their milks. The cookies were pretty large ( bigger than our hands) and were enjoyed sparingly.  I hope that mural next to the old Broke Girls Coffee Bar turns out well! Although I skipped out on ice cream today, maybe, just maybe I'll be back if  my stomach can take it, ha ha.
