Away from the crowds is always good. Going early to Ranch 99's Sam Woo for breakfast is also good.

Although we arrived at 8:30 when Sam Woo opened, there was actually a line...
and the one man show who seats people, takes orders and serves food, was pretty damn busy that morning.
Astroboi's birthday was last month (yay!) so this was a belated birthday outing for him. I didn't want it to be months later like last time. He really liked my Sam Woo breakfast post from several weeks ago so wanted to come here for his birthday breakfast.

As you can see, our three items were noodle heavy. We were first served the shrimp/pork won ton soup (wrappers were thick and not tender at all but it was packed with meaty filling).

I thought I ordered the same thing Cathy did from before, the duck soup with noodles served dry. Well, the duck was in the soup. No worries since it was still good.

Astroboi chose the soy sauce chicken, which I was glad was served on the side with the noodles. The soup is on the bland side, but the chicken (and the duck) was pretty tasty.

We thought that the noodles in the soy sauce chicken dish (described as 'lo mein') would be thicker so when we got this last dish and saw that it was the same noodles, we were both a tiny bit bummed. No worries since Astroboi and I enjoyed all of the dishes and he got to take home leftovers.
We went to the inhouse bakery. Unlike several weeks ago, their display cases were still empty. I really wanted that puff pastry milk bun again. He ended up getting some Portuguese egg tarts for later.

My three purchases - the milk puff pastry bun (which had the cheese inside), another milk bun with cheese (labeled curiously as "Mexican"), and a Japanese floral bun (this was so nice and light and fun to eat when picking off the "petals").

To kill time before dessert, we visited Daiso and marveled at all of their cute (and useless) shit there.

We were fascinated by the cookie cutter roller. I ended up getting a patriotic wreath for July 4th. Onl $1.50!
Dessert would be in Kensington. This shot was taken a few days after the great Muhammad Ali passed away. This was in the window of a neighboring art gallery.

Apartment complex on Adams in Kensington.

It was so nice not seeing Pappalecco so busy this time. We ended up sitting outside so we could be ourselves and not worry about irritiating people around us with our juvenile "humor" (ha ha).
Our dessert duo - Lemon nonna (a lemon tart with shortbread crust dusted with powdered sugar and pine nuts) and the Napoleon (chous pastry puffs layered with cream and dusted with powdered sugar and cocoa powder).

A for the drink, this was Pappalecco's version of the Shakerato (a shot of espresso shaken to a froth with ice cubes). This version was neatly strained into a wine glass (interesting presentation) and topped with three coffee beans. Nice.

My drink was so smooth. I'm going to have to learn to make this so I can have it whenever I want! Shake it but don't break it, ha ha.

As always, anytime and anywhere that I am with Astroboi, it always a fun time. We've been friends for so long and I'm so glad that our friendship has endured over the decades.
