Katy's Smokehouse

After the awesomeness of seeing a massive totem pole in a supermarket parkinglot and deerheads in a barbershop, we headed northward to our next stop...

which was the cute seaside town of Trinidad.

Above is a memorial lighthouse (the real lighthouse was a few minutes away). We were here for lunch actually...

and also to enjoy the views...

Katy's Smokehouse was just up the hill but before that, there was a picturesque church, Holy Trinity.

I'd read online that this was THE place to go for smoked fish, oysters, scallops, etc.  I also read from that four lettered site negative comments about the owner but mostly from people who did not like his 'no nonsense' attitude. Reading on, it seemed that the complainers were the ones who had kids who touched the glass display and misbehaved.  For the record, the owner and his wife were both there the day of our visit and both were actually quite friendly and knowledgeable. There was no trace of dickishness at all. One of the reviews went so far as to call him an "a-hole".  I didn't get that vibe but then, we didn't have a brat kid with us.

The smokehouse is small but is full of vacuum sealed bags of their smoked products as well as tinned or canned fish.  The prices were on the steeper side but we didn't mind because we were hungry and we knew that the owner took pride in what he sold. He took the time to explain to us the smoking process and what his favorites were.

While there, we made our selections, bought some crackers and cream cheese spread which happened to be made by a local company.

See that sign? "Do NOT lean on glass"! He means it.

Of the items we bought for lunch that day, we especially liked the smoked scallops. They were so firm and meaty and had great smoked flavor.

Lunch was enjoyed by a bench near the lighthouse memorial.

Smoked salmon (I remember brown sugar was one of the ingredients), smoked albacore, scallops, crackers and cream cheese spread.

OMG, here it is again...in all of its glory.

Meaty smoked goodness...

and here's the other side!

Thank goodness for our cooler because we couldn't finish all of this in one sitting.

Scallop and cream cheese on a cracker on my knee...

Our amazing and beautiful view...

So glad we made this a stop. I would gladly go here again! Everything is caught local and prepared and smoked in house by this couple. No chemicals are used. They really do have quality smoked seafood here.

Katy's Smokehouse even had a short writeup in Saveur (here's the link) which details the history of the smokehouse and the techniques learned (from the local Yurok tribe) to smoke the fish as the previous owner had done for decades.

Before driving up to our next stop (a hokey tourist attraction, yet), the next post will focus on more of the views in Trinidad. TC was excited to find a trail that led down the cliff to the beach...
