we departed good ole SD and headed up for our Summer Vacation with a few planned stops along the way..
We usually time it right so that we could arrive at the Starbucks in Tustin after they open (4:30 am) and our new favorite stop, a local Vietnamese sandwich shop where we picked up a few nibbles for now such as these pate chaud.
The sky was overcast for most of our drive up. Just an hour from Tustin was this beachside city in LA, which boasts a pier that is the western terminus of Route 66, if that clue isn't easy enough.
There was another stop (which is also mentioned in the song, "Route 66"), this time for coffee...
and donuts too!
This little burger shack was a welcome stop in this cute beach town on our way up...
plus this cool lookout point in the next town up...
which had a path down to the beach (watch out for tar spots; they are hard to remove)...
When we finally got to Santa Barbara, we had some bougie ice cream (don't get me wrong, it was really good!) at their public market...
There were so many pretty tiled corners all over State Street (one of SB's main drags)...
Our hotel was cute and within walking distance to many major sights, as well as their local community college. We had dinner at an eatery in neighboring Goleta (their proceeds go to special needs charities) and tried to catch the sunset at this clifftop preserve...
Although we missed the actual sunset, it was cool to be on this undeveloped stretch of land. It was a pretty long but fun day. We left super early and did a lot of stops in between instead of driving a straight shot to Santa Barbara (which would have take 4-4.5 hours).

Tomorrow we would see Santa Barbara's "greatest hits"...get all of the touristy stuff out of the way, heh.
