Little Yangon

Dinner that night would be with a former student (class of 2000)...

I knew she liked Burmese food and since both of us hadn't been here before, Little Yangon was our dinner destination that evening...

Her fiance couldn't make it that evening so it was just her. She gave us a "save the date" memento for their upcoming wedding, a repurposed 45 single with their names on it and their wedding date. I thought it was quite clever and fitting since they are both musicians.

The last time we had dinner with her and her then BF now fiancee was at another Burmese place, the more gringofied Burma Superstar (Oakland location).

I wish San Diego had a Burmese restaurant!

We selected a variety of items to share...

Tea Leaf Salad (you can't go to a Burmese restaurant and NOT order this):

Bu Tee Kyaw (Burmese Fried Squash) - Kabocha squash battered and fried and served with a tamarind based sauce.

Pickled Mango Salad - This was quite interesting and very strong tasting, especially with all of the red onions.

Vegetarian Samusas:

They were filled with potatoes and curry.

Yeah, we had a ton of food, which I insisted that my former student take home to her fiance.

Noodle Salad - Again, this had quite bold flavors from the dried shrimp, tamarind sauce and garlic chips.

Palata - Pab fried layered bread (loved this):

Rice noodle dish with pork (TC's choice)...This kind of looked like a plain looking pancit bihon.

Our check..

Gosh, I don't even know if I took a photo of the Rainbow Salad. In any case, we ate it!

I found this video from Tokyo USA where they visit Little Yangon. While Japanese is spoken in the video, the ladies from the restaurant speak English when explaining the recipes (which is a cool behind the scenes look at how they make tea leaf salad, mohinga and shrimp fritters).

Another Burmese restaurant in Daly City,= is Burma Cafe, which Kirk blogged about several months ago. We'll have to hit up that place later this summer for a future trip. My former students wedding will be at the end of August so we are looking forward to the big event!
