TC and I liked this place so much, we wanted to go again, but this time with Bert...
We each got a sandwich: I had the suntanned Tuna (the bread was brown, is that racist? ha ha), Bert had the Double Overhead turkey sandwich, and TC had what she got before, a breakfast croissant sandwich with bacon. Our coffee drinks (not shown) were hot coffee for Bert and iced caramel mocha for me while TC enjoyed a fruit smoothie (forgot the combo but it was refreshing!). The service here is so friendly. Katy herself was there that day and took our order. There were many locals as well as visitors who stopped by for a quick bite.

View of the back end of Katy's Cafe. We saw several customers walk back here while we were inside. When we left, we saw that there was a small eating area out there. A few more steps west is the beach!

We went to the beach earlier and the pier after lunch...
Before going home, we went to our favorite ice cream place in the South Bay, Oasis Ice Cream Parlor. This was the ice cream place visited by Andrew Zimmern a few years ago when he did his San Diego episode. It didn't make the cut, but photos of his visit with the owner and the workers are proudly displayed on the wall (above eye level). The owner of Oasis was there that day greeting customers. The young lady with the ear plugs was working that day and remembered us, "I haven't seen you guys in a long time!". She's always so very nice!

New flavors and now mini pops are available! Just a note, the blueberry isn't really new. It was on the sign back in 2010.

Since my last visit back in March 2013 (that post linked at the end), the price has gone up from $1.60 a scoop to $1.90. A double is now $3.00, a triple $4.10 (the price of the old quadruple) and four scoops, $5.25. I guess they had to raise their prices over the year, maybe because of the Zimmern effect and the exposure he brought them.
In comparison: in 2010, a single was $1.35, a double was $2.20, triples were $3.60, quadruple was $4.00)

The super dark purple one was grape. I think he used Kool Aid or something artificial because that was definitely not natural. We both got double flavors and before we left, a trio of paletas to take home (since we had our ice chest in the car).

I was interested in the grosella. It's a flavor I've seen and had before at the Chula Vista location of Neveria Tocumbo.

Our cups. I had a double with Grosella on top with the new Grape on the bottom. Bert had walnut only while TC had cookies and cream.

The grosella had an interesting but strong berrylike floral flavor. This was more of a sorbet than the lighter colored creamy ice cream I have at Neveria Tocumbo. The grosella is a type of gooseberry that resembles a currant. I chose both flavors because they were new and also because red and purple look awesome together! Despite the vibrant colors, I thought they both tasted too artificial, especially the grape.

I love these fruit paintings!

If you crane your neck, you can see this picture frame highlighting Zimmern's visit.

A utility box seen somewhere along Coronado Ave commemorating John J. Montgomery's disputed accomplishment in the field of aviation...

In all, a fun day! We got to beat the holiday crowds and we saw the fireworks shells set up on the pier too. We later watched the fireworks at home on TV.
