TC was but a wee tyke back then...and we've avoided that tourist trap ever since. However, it WAS on our daughter's list of "to visit" places so off we went by foot to enjoy the bayfront and trek over to tourist hell...
The fog had already burned off and it was warming up, which was good.

Thane's cousin recommended a place for clam chowder in a bread bowl near Fisherman's Wharf. We must have misunderstood her because I thought she said Pier 7 or 8. She told us that there were carts hidden behind the buildings that sold the bread bowl/chowder combo. We couldn't find it...

Coit Tower...

We had a fun time walking up that steep hill and enjoying the views at the top of Coit Tower with Thane back in 2009.
The Exploratorium, which used to be near the Palace of Fine Arts moved to Pier 15...

I got excited when I saw the building for Tcho Chocolate, a local company. I remembered seeing Blue Bottle Coffee offering coffee flavored with chocolate from Tcho.

But here was the bad news...

Gaaaaah! (screams and tears hair in massive frustration)
The good news is that Tcho will at least be closer to Thane and his family, so if we ever visit them again, we can stop by.
From afar, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge which connects San Francisco to Marin County.

Also in the distance, the infamous prison, Alcatraz...

Alcatraz always reminds me of this classic scene from "So I Married an Axe Murderer" featuring the late great Phil Hartman as "Vicky, the tour guide":
"This way to the cafeteria!"
Our walk was rather pleasant and we made it to Pier 39 way ahead of the crowds. The sea lions were there, but not as close as they used to be. There were some empty wooden floating boards in the foreground, but the sea lions hung out in the back.

It was interesting seeing the displays of "alpha male" behavior. There were a few loud "fights" with a couple of them pushing each other into the water. The stench wasn't as bad as I remembered it as well.
This was the time to enjoy the grapefruit macaron from Miette...

As you can see, a mostly clear, sunny and lovely day.

That day's beautiful weather would end up being a far far cry from the very next day's rainstorm!
Instead of me talking about Pier 39, here is more info from their official website:
www.pier39.com
A small lunch would be next on the agenda...

The whole movie is so funny, especially the Scottish father!
"A piper is down!"
"Head, paper! Now!"
Haha!
