where we passed by the "The Sweet Spot" sculpture,

as well as the "Surfhenge" sculpture which is at the foot of the IB Pier.
We got pretty lucky that morning finding a spot right across the street...
There was an original version of the Imperial Beach pier built in 1909, but it was demolished in a storm in 1948. In 1963, a new 1,500 foot pier was built but was again destroyed in the 1980's. The most recent incarnation of the pier was rebuilt in 1989 and refurbished in 2009.

The morning of our visit last week, TC and I saw junior lifeguards in training, as well as the ever present surfers, fishermen, and pretty waves breaking along the shore.

The wooden IB pier extends 1,491 out into the 20 foot deep waters off the coast.

Yesterday, we all spent a good part of our day relaxing at the beach, where we parked ourselves on the south side of the pier, witnessed several aggressive seagulls attack Cheeto's and sandwich bags, walked along the shore where we saw Pier South (the fancy new hotel), and saw a fireworks/pyrotechnic setup on the pier in preparation for the July the 4th fireworks show.

We were wondering about these, then realized upon closer inspection that they were fireworks shells being set up.

That would explain the truck on the pier...

The ends of each tube (for lack of a better word) were plugged up. Not sure if this is the final configuration but we were fascinated by these and the fact that there wasn't anything to protect them from pier/beach goers (no yellow tape?).

More info here about viewing fireworks from the IB Pier...
These signs have been the cause of a recent controversy (article linked at the end of this post):

It was another lovely day in "the most Southwesterly City in the U.S."...
