Crescent City: Battery Point Lighthouse, The Curly Redwood Lodge & drive by photos

After our brief foray into Brookings, Oregon, we made our way back down to our last city in Northern California...

One more night then we'd head back down.

Before checking into our motel, we drove into the Crescent City Citizens Dock...

As it was the early evening, the Dock was already closed to most activities.

A fish taco place that we wanted to go to months ago was out of business which was a bummer.

Crab pots. Yes.

Animal exploitation - this was like Sea World's poorer cousin:

The Lighthouse is a designated California landmark and listed under the registry as the "Crescent City Lighthouse".

It was one of the state's first lighthouses, built in 1856. The lighthouse is only open to the public during low tide. There is a museum on site that visitors can check out. It was too late in the day to even visit and of course, the tide was not ideal.

The unique geography of Crescent City makes it susceptible to tsunamis. In fact, the town was destroyed by a tsunami in the 1964, so much so that the whole town had to be rebuilt. As recent as 2011, due to the 9.0 Japanese earthquake, the city was once again battered by tsunami waves and suffered major damage.

A few months prior, I looked into lodging for our night's stay. I'm a sucker for vintage digs and the Curly Redwood Lodge fit the bill. It was not a fancy place by any means, but it was right off the highway and affordable. Most of all, the name itself, Curly Redwood, denotes the origin of its construction; the hotel was built from the wood of ONE giant Curly Redwood Tree (57,000 boards of lumber) was cut from that single tree in 1952. The lodge opened in 1957, and while the rooms are basic, it does feature covered parking for their guests.

I did the "check in" honors and had to wait awhile a whole group of bikers was there before me. There were lots of leather chaps on both the men and women.  Only one lady was working the counter too which was a slow process.

Here are some photos of the curly redwood walls/panels. These photos aren't adequately showing the lustre of the unique pattersn in the wood.

More photos of the sign...

Across the street was a seafood place.

Our night's stay was basic. I inadvertently left my camera charger here and had to phone in the next day to ask them to mail it to me (I received it one week later after we got back to San Diego), so that kind of sucked.  The lodging as I mentioned was clean and basic. Our room was spacious and had old (or if you want to use the trendy phrase, "mid-century" furniture".

We were so tired that we didn't even go out to dinner since we had the fried clams and chowder a few hours prior. We did snack on some crackers, cheese and fruit but pretty much crashed for the evening. We had a long day ahead of us.
