was the reboot of what used to be the old Baskin Robbins Ice Cream place...
It was yet another ice cream place, but with a Mexican twist! I'm not sure how long they've been here but man, we felt late to the party!

This was another spot I hadn't been to in literally decades. I mean, we're talking about high school here.

All of their ice cream flavors and paletas are made in-house. They also had flavors that the other Neveria Tocumbo didn't have. Lots of interesting flavors like Gansitos (a flavor based on a snack cake), Queso (cheese), Guanavana (soursop or in Filipino, 'guayabano'), and Grosella (which you will soon see). They didn't have the Ciruela (prune) flavor here but they did have the Nanches flavor. We were the only ones in there. The girl helping us was really nice and let me sample a few of the flavors I asked about.

When I asked her about Grosella, she had a hard time describing it other than it was a 'small red fruit' and said it was easier to just taste it!

To my surprise, TC really liked that Grosella sample and ended up choosing that as her flavor for the day. As for me, I was about to get the Nanches, but went with the Mamey (a flavor I hadn't tried before) after sampling it.

The Grosella (pronounced Groh-say-Ya): Now this was ONE scoop! Very generous. Both of our ice creams cost $2.78 TOTAL. You can't even buy one scoop at this price point at Cold Stone or Ben & Jerry's! It was very creamy with ribbons of pink throughout. The ice cream had a bit of a floral taste, almost tasting like roses but not quite. It had a pleasantly sweet and fruity.

The Grosella is a type of gooseberry. It resembles the currant and looks like this:

My flavor, the Mamey (pronounced 'Mah-MEY'). It was light orange in color and had almost a starchy but sweet taste to it. It reminded me of the Lucuma ice cream that TORC and I had back at Latin Chef and when Bert and I went to Nazca Grill.

Here's what the mamey fruit looks like. Quite striking, isn't it? It's a football shaped fruit with bright orange flesh. I love how this fruit vendor cute the edges to make it look quite attractive. You can see the big seed within.

I ended up saving half of my ice cream so that Bert could enjoy it later. It was such an interesting flavor I wanted to share.

Quite surprising, this flavor was.

They have hanging monkeys here too!

The covered seating area outside:

They have more exotic flavors than Oasis Ice Cream Parlor. I do like the fact that they make all of their ice creams at the shops.

In addition to ice cream, they also serve tostilocos, raspados, fruit salads, mangoneada, a version of the chamango but made with sandia ('watermelon') to name a few items. I think Oasis and this place are tied now for the best ice cream in the South Bay!

They don't have a website but here are the reviews from yelp.
They have a wide variety and I know that we will be back to try even more of the unfamiliar flavors.

I got my first tostilocos at Neveria Tocumbo. This location looks nice- outdoor seating, which El Cajon never offers...nice post.
Hi Cathy - I'm going to have to try that tostilocos. My daughter really likes it but I've never had it. We wanted to go today after La Kalaka Flaca but she was too full, so that was a missed opportunity to try yet another exotic flavor and/or tostilocos.
It's clean here and I like the outside seating too. Useful in the summertime, I'm sure.
