Return to Aunt Emma's Pancakes

Earlier this morning Bert and I were out super early, like waaaaay early.

We dropped off TC with the dance company in the wee morning hours. They would be traveling to LA for festival performance. The night before our neighborhood had a scheduled power outage and the electricity wouldn't be on 'til 8 am...

I always seem to be alone when stuff like this happens like the earthquake we had on Easter several years ago and a few other blackouts. There weren't really any breakfast places open in National City as early as 6 am (fast food doesn't count). Bert wanted to try Aunt Emma's in Chula Vista...

They have such a great Googie influenced sign although the font for "Aunt Emma's" is kind of Wild West looking. The last time I was here was two years ago with TC and we used a coupon. I didn't have one on me today, dagnabbit.

Their coffee wasn't the greatest...

I unfortunately tried what they called their "iced" coffee and man was it the worst drink swill ever! I literally only had two sips and that was enough for me.

It was very watery and hardly any coffee flavor. I know I shouldn't have expected much, but at least some coffee flavor would have helped. Whoever made this must have a totally different concept of what iced coffee should be. Ugh!  Never again! That was  $2 mistake. That'll learn me. :(

I had the waffle (with some sort of whipped cream thing masquerading as butter but it wasn't) with two sausage patties while Bert had the California omelette and hash browns (it also came with a side of pancakes)...

Cheese, avocado ad sausage...

The pancakes also had that whipped cream/butter stuff on it. We ended up taking half of the omelette and  3/4 of the pancakes and waffle home for later. This was a lot of food.

They only had one waitress on staff and service was on the slower side. It started getting crowded when we left at 7:30 am.

More on Googie architecture here (parts 1 &2):

There's so many of these signs for old coffee shops, diners, and carwashes throughout older parts of Chula Vista, San Diego and Los Angeles. I'm sure you've seen some!

Later that day I would be meeting up with Dennis of A Radiused Corner, where we would have lunch in Hillcrest...

We've passed this place a few times and have wondered what it was like but have never stopped in. Just looks like typical American breakfast, nothing too special or fancy. Bummer about that coffee though, it kind of looks more like chocolate milk than iced coffee.

It's all right but not spectacular there.

That coffee was the WORST! Even chocolate milk would have tasted better than that swill!
