We were originally going to have dinner here...

but there were no tables available and we didn't want to wait (it was already 7 pm)...

so Pho Hiep Grill a few doors down it was!
I remember when this place opened in 2008. There were very few Vietnamese restaurants in Chula Vista seven years ago.
We got the usual. For me, nem nuong (this pales in comparison to Brodard's version) and for TC, spring rolls (not pictured).

I also got an order of the fried spring rolls for us to share...

Bert's pho tai (the meat was kind of dry)...

and TC's birthday meal, bun with shrimp. They put nearly a dozen shrimp in there! Very generous! She only ate three; I was surprised when I counted the leftovers before boxing it up.

We didn't have to wait too long for our dinner. Unlike at nearby Sushi House (which is Nephew #3's favorite). TC was curious about it. La Ley wasn't too crazy about SH and said their rolls were mostly "filler" (Krab). My sis thinks it's okay. With these rather lackluster endorsements, I wasn't too keen on going there but it was TC's first pick for her birthday meal which went to Plan B, Pho Hiep Grill.
Dessert was also in the same strip mall, Tap Tap Boba. She wanted to try their ice cream macarons and get milk tea boba.

"You can look, but you can't touch!"

They really need to label these things. We had to ask the girl what the flavors were. The pink shell with green was green tea. The purple shell with white was vanilla, etc...The ice cream macarons were by Brick and cost $3.45 each; they were also on the small side. You're paying almost $4 for about three or four bites. But then again, the portion size was just right. Any bigger for me would have been overkill. Milk and I aren't friends anymore.

TC's honey milk tea with boba and our ice cream macs - Vanilla, Cappuccino and Strawberry (the ice cream was not even pink).

Not bad...

Ironically, since we had dessert, we didn't slice up her chocolate roll cake (or the jelly roll cake) tonight. We'll just have to do it tomorrow!
Previous visit to Pho Hiep & Grill:
May 2009 - I know we've been many times here since then but probably didn't take photos. We still haven't tried the original Pho Hiep in Linda Vista. This location, at the Telegraph Canyon Vons strip mall is their second. Their third restaurant, Pho Hiep Grill & Chateau (that's a mouthful), in Eastlake Village Walk is our favorite since their menu is more extensive (banh xeo!).
Previous visit to Tap Tap Boba:
November 2014
One of TC's favorite bands (they're local from San Diego!), Pierce the Veil with their cover of Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" (from the Punk Goes Pop 4 compilation):
I have to admit that I like PTV's version much much better!
