Cafe Hielo

It was finally time for dessert a few doors down...

We were supposed to go here but got sidetracked by the allure of the new dumpling shop...

Our unexpected foray did not deter us from a sweet ending at the new'ish Cafe Hielo, a Korean dessert shop.

Cathy was here recently and the photo of her berry berry cheesecake (which I forwarded to D, TORC and KD) excited us. Plus, none of us had ever tried Korean style shaved ice snow before. It would be like having Korean halo halo.

Although we were three, we stuck with two desserts to share, the mango cheese cake and the Tiramisu. Both were really refreshing on this super hot day (I even wore a damn dress; the thought of wearing pants made me cringe).

Look at the texture of their shaved ice now. So different from the ice in Filipino halo halo or the Taiwanese shaved snow ice ribbons or Hawaiian shave ice. This was fine but not really fluffy. It was also plain unlike the Taiwanese ice which is mixed with condensed milk when frozen. Asides from the whipped cream, I really liked the mango and cheesecake dessert. The blocks of cheesecake were fun to eat!

It was packed when we arrived and we were lucky to get the last table in the back. It was quite the popular place with a mostly Korean (and multigenerational) crowd.

I think TC and Bert would also like this place so I'm banking on a future visit to give it another go.

Who else went to Cafe Hielo?

They also now have a new location on Washington Street in Hillcrest. A newly opened Korean dessert cafe in Kearny Mesa called Cafe Benne is another place to explore once they get settled in.
