Cotija's taco shop, on the eastern edge of the Vons shopping center in Bonita. Although TJ Oyster Bar's second location is right around the corner and Lolita's is across the street, there are deals to be had here...
This particular visit was from back in December. I thought I had posted it but apparently forgot about it. Bert and I, along with TC and her cousin (nephew #3 aka her "twin"; this is the one who taught himself magic tricks, how to play the ukelele and piano, cup stacking, and is also a self-taugh Rubik's cube whiz) went for a run (walk for me) at Rohr park. Afterwards, we had drinks across the street at JETS and then went here for an early lunch. Like really early.

Nephew #3's pork and fish taco (it's hard to tell for that second one):

TC's beef rolled taco combo...

My usual, two potato tacos:

Two fish tacos, which I think were Bert's.

More recently, I went here with Mr. TJ and La Ley. I noticed they did some redecorating, adding cool pierced metal star lanterns from the ceiling (seen in photos near the end of the post) plus molding along the wall tiles.

It was a Thursday and apparently potato tacos AND the mini tacos were .99! I was expecting to pay almost $5 for my trio (two potato at $1.49/reg price plus one mini adobada at $1.69/reg price). My total was a whopping $3.21. Yeah, score. On Fridays, fish tacos are .99! Take that TJOB #2!

My $3.21 lunch. You can't even buy ONE fkg taco at a hipster place with this chump change. Granted, it's not gourmet quality but sometimes you just want the basics.

Mr. TJ's chile relleno and enchilada combo. La Ley also had potato tacos and a fried beef one (not shown). She said it was much cheaper and better tasting than Lolita's.

Yesterday we stopped by here after checking out Pavaraga, the new coffee shop near TJOB #1.

I like the variety of their salsa bar. There are four or five different salsas plus pickled red onion, sliced cucumbers and radishes. The green salsa is really hot (Serrano chiles). The chunky red one was mild. The other one was pretty hot. There is an orange salsa that I didn't get; that was habanero which I can't really handle.

Bert's carne asada taco, my usual (yes, two potato tacos with the deep fried shell), and TC's five rolled chicken tacos with a side of rice.

The carne asada soft taco came with two tortillas so Bert divided the meat between the two. It was pretty filling as were my potato tacos. I love the crunchy fried shells so much. Not really healthy but, yeah.
Previous visit to Cotija's:
May 2012 (a compendium of random lunches)
There are a few other taco shops I've been meaning to visit down south including a new one in Imperial Beach. These aren't fancy hipster spots but they are hole in the wall joints that are favorites and frequented by locals and recommended by La Ley as well as my other Mexican friends. If you grew up down south like I did, you pretty much ate Filipino as well as Mexican food. So, eventually I'll be checking those places out...
