Panaderia Gonzalez is now Panaderia Cazares

After getting my prized tortillas and the trio of coyotas from Otay Farms Market...

I headed south on Broadway and hung a right on Coronado Ave. As you cross the bridge across the 5, hang a left on Hollister (it's near that awesome birria place, Birria Fernandez)...

The old Panaderia Gonzalez (there used to be four; there are now only two) has now changed ownership and is now call Panaderia Cazares. This is an older photo below:

I was hoping they would have tamales there (according to the sign, Sinaloan style too) but they did not. Sad Lorax.

I was also looking for this, a "corona"  (crown) that I saw on yelp.

(photo from yelper Sugar N. Spice H's post on "Panaderia Cazares")

when I showed the photo on my phone to the lady, she said they didn't have them today but said they were similar to their Canastas (baskets) which are shaped the same but have a different fruit filling and a lattice top. I told her I'd have to come again another time for the Coronas.

I didn't take too many photos while in here. It's hard to take pix while balancing a tray with tongs. If you look at my old Panaderia Gonzalez post (linked at the end), it looks the same except they took out the island in the middle of the store. It's still a bit on the sparse side here. They also make cakes here (all occasions).

My tray before they were bagged up - four types of empanadas.

Cream and cheese filled.

Jalapeno and cream cheese and pineapple.

All were different. I was surprised that the pineapple one had a rounded shape. Most places make pointy triangles.

The puff pastry empanada was so good. Bert and I finished that off pretty quickly earlier this evening.

The cream empanada was a bit much for me. The cheese one was just all right. The dough felt too soft and while they looked interesting, I wouldn't buy them again. Bert on the other hand, liked these and will probably enjoy the ravaged pieces (I broke them up to taste them but not actually eat the whole thing) with his coffee tomorrow.

Like many of these small mom and pop panaderias, there is no website. Here are the sparse reviews from you know where.

Next stop....another bakery down the street!
