Welcome Back to Cayucos!

After more than nine plus hours with lots of stops in between, we were finally back to Cayucos...

known as "the town that time forgot"....

We last visited Cayucos (although briefly) during our summer road trip of 2011. We came mainly to check out the Brown Butter Cookie Company plus Westways magazine had just written a story on Cayucos for their June/July 2011 issue, AND former SD foodblogger Marie of Meandering Eats had also sung the praises of the cookie place (her inlaws also live here!)...

In the distance we could see Morro Rock (not pictured)  which is seven miles south in Morro Bay. We also saw their pier and their uncrowded beach...

We checked in to our cute little motel on Ocean Ave (the main drag) and took a look at our surroundings. We had a nice kitchenette where we planned to make our dinners. The room was very nice (not hipster/modern nice, but cute and cottagey looking nice). There was a patio garden which was just spectacular and best of all, everything was within walking distance - the beach, the pier, the shops, the market. Everything. Plus the husband and wife team who ran this place were just about the nicest people you could ever meet. Our room had everything we needed and a table was even laid out with restaurant recommendations and menus...

We barely had time to put our stuff away when TC wanted to explore the beach...

In the distance, you can see the Morro Bay Power Plant and Morro Rock...

The pier was built in 1872 by the town's founder Capt. James Cass. Over the past century, the pier has been lengthened, parts rebuilt and has suffered major damage in past storms. In fact, part of the pier is closed off and at the time of our visit, there was a major campaign to "save the pier" as seen by numerous flyers all over the town and a big banner on the pier. Many pilings are over 60 years old and some may even be more than 130 years old. Because of this, the seaward portion of the pier has been deemed a safety hazard.

Here's a video on Cayucos that I apparently posted three years ago, but here it is again...

I previously used one of this person's other videos for my Jack Ranch Cafe & James Dean Memorial post. You can see how quaintness of the town...

By the way, locals pronounce Cayucos as "Kye-you-cuss", not "Kay-you-cohs". Cayucos is the hispanization of a Chumash words that means "kayak" or "canoe".

Here is a local's video on Save the Cayucos Pier project:

There is good news though! After looking up info for this post, I learned that half a million was raised to help save the pier and the county of San Luis Obispo will begin the pier rebuild next month!  The project is expected to cost $3.5 million dollars.

Up next, another snack at a nearby chowderhouse...

It is very quaint! It's very low key here and slow paced. Nice and relaxing.

Those vintage looking signs were cool.
