Micho'z Fresh Lebanese Grill

It had been awhile since I last saw Dennis of A Radiused Corner...

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of sharing lunch with him at Micho'z Fresh Lebanese Grill (formerly known as "Off the Sajj) on University...

Micho'z is next to a thrift store and across the street from the big rainbow flag on Center St. Many places in Hillcrest were gearing up for Pride Weekend, which is this coming weekend. Micho'z was Dennis's choice, a tossup actually between this place and Mister Falafel.  There is an outdoor patio as well as a nice open and airy seating area inside.

We shared several appetizers or 'mezza' which comprised our lunch.

The interior view from our patio seats...

As we were waiting for our mezza to arrive, we were served pickled carrots while Dennis got a yogurt drink.  Our first appetizer was a small order of baba ghanouj ($3.99/half order) with pita bread followed by spinach pies ($4.99/4 pieces) and an order of traditional Lebanese meat pies called kibbeh ($7.99/4 pieces). Of the appetizers, I enjoyed the kibbeh the best. It was spiced ground beef with minced onions surrounded by a fried meat casing served with a yogurt sauce. The spinach pie was kind of dry inside (some cheese would have helped); the dough used as the casing was puffy and kind of bland, although I liked how the pie was shaped and folded.

I would totally get the kibbeh again but not the spinach pies. Meat pies for the win! Service was efficient and friendly. It was nice seeing Dennis again and catching up on things.

The Mister and I were just talking about going for some Lebanese food. It's been a while since we've had some. I think it's time. I like the meat pies at Taste of Lebanon on Miramar. And they have really good babaganouj and baklavas!

Thanks for the tip C! I'll have to try that place if I'm ever in that area. This place is all right but since it's in Hillcrest, it's a bit more gringo'd.

I love how the spinach pie is also shaped - too bad it was dry and bland. Boo. The kibosh looks really interesting, it almost looks like corn dog batter… haha.
