D Street Noshery - PDX 671, Fuego de Lotus & Bailey's

Our awesome lunch from one of Portland's food pods...

The D Street Noshery....

Let's take a look...

I really wanted to eat at this cart, PDX 671 (PDX is the airport code for Portland; 671 is the area code for Guam)...

Their menu (see it online here):

I already knew what I wanted...

While we were waiting for Ed (the owner of PDX 671) to make my food, Bert and TC chose their respective lunches. One of the carts we were curious about wasn't open, Koi Fusion. So Bert got his from Fuego de Lotus, a Venezuelan food cart...

He ordered the Green Chili Chicken...

TC got a Philly Cheese Steak from Bailey's Hot Dogs. Bert had a nice chat with the lady working the cart (she was Filipina).

Eh...

I liked that they had covered seating, I mean, look at this set up! Very nice! Especially for a wimpy SoCal chick like me. I hate being cold and this even had heaters inside and plastic so that you wouldn't get wet. Meanwhile, check out that "Waffle Cones Filled with Food?" cart! We should have tried something from there!

All right, back to business.

I ordered PDX 671's version of Chicken Kelaguen and Bonelos Uhang (Shrimp Patties). I've had kelaguen from the various Chamorro places in San Diego (as well as homemade from several friends) and this was THE BEST I've had. The chicken is not finely chopped. The chunks were not too small nor were they too large to be unwieldy. No, this was just right and the flavors were deliciously sour, salty, and spicy from the seasonings. And those shrimp patties...Wow. These were sizable corn and shrimp fritters. Very fresh tasting. Not greasy at all. They tasted so good with Brother Ed's finadene sauce too.

I enjoyed chatting with Ed Sablan. He was supercool and very friendly to all of his customers. I told him that I was happy to see Islander food in Portland done right. We liked how the plates were "real", not paper. A nice touch. Ed even told me there was a new Chamorro place in San Diego called "Guahan Grill" (it's actually in Oceanside). I will have to check that place out one of these days.

Another item that we shared was their red rice and titiyas (coconut flatbread). Of the Chamorro items we tried, we liked the first plate the best. The orange hued rice (courtesy of annatto or achiote powder) was the perfect accompaniment to the kelaguen and fritters. The flatbread didn't really wow me. The coconut flavor was faint; it was basically a thin tortilla.

Bert shared his plate as well - the Green Chicken served with white rice, black beans, fried plantains, and an arepa (the thick corn puck you see on top of the chicken). Very heavy on the starches. The chicken was shredded. It wasn't too spicy but it had a tiny bit of a kick to it.

Lastly, TC's Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. Not that exciting but she wasn't feeling too adventurous for lunch.

Back to the corn and shrimp fritters and the kelaguen, which was bursting with flavor. Again, look at those cubes of chicken beckoning to you...

The fritters were chock full of vegetables too. Loved these!

Here are more of the food carts at this location...

This one wasn't open yet...they apparently serve vegetarian Indian food. Kinda redundant, eh?

This happened to be the same street that Pok Pok and Pix Patisserie are located. We'd already been there so we wanted to explore a few of the other places down the street...

TC looked a bit chilly there. I'm with her on the Philly cheesesteak. Always a safe bet. hehe
