a gigantic cross that has been there since 1934 and lit by FDR via telegraph!
There were previous renditions of the cross, but the present day cross, which stands at 103 feet tall, was purchased in 1997 by the highest bidder, which was the The Council of Armenian American Organizations in Northern California. A plaque at the base of the cross commemorates the victims of the 1915 Armenian genocide.
One main reason to check out this site is its significance in movie pop culture. If you are a Clint Eastwood fan like Bert is, then this particular scene featuring Dirty Harry and Scorpio from the 1971 flm "Dirty Harry" will have more meaning after having seen the cross in person:
I read that the director tried to film this last scene every day for a whole month but was hampered by the San Francisco fog. The last day of filming was clear and those are the scenes that you see above.
OMG, that villain was so creepy.
The cross is quite imposing. It's so much bigger than the crosses on Mt. Helix and Mt. Soledad. We had to walk a ways back to get the full effect.
Although it was not a clear day, we still had a relatively nice (and cool) view of the city. This is the view looking towards Diamond Heights.
