we made our way past the famous Doggie Diner head on Sloat (more info here from a previous post)...
and headed east toward the fog shrouded hill...
where we could see a tiny bit of the cross that lies atop Mt. Davidson, the highest natural point in San Francisco and also the geographic center of the city.
See all the trees? There are some who believe that the century old grove should be uprooted and lay bare because they are not "native" to the area. More on this controversy in a future post. Some folks are dead serious about this over here, to the point of "girding" certain trees so they would die (cutting a ring into the circumference of the tree's bark, which kills it).
Mt. Davidson is located in the neighborhood known as Sherwood Forest (such a cool name!). The trees were planted by Adolph Sutro, the 24th mayor of San Francisco; this areais one of the few forested areas of the city.
We parked on Dalewood since the flight of stairs was right where Dalewood meets Lansdale Ave. It was still early in the morning and parking was not an issue.

From what I read, it didn't take too long to reach the top of the hill which has fantastic views of the city all around.
You could barely see the neighborhood through the trees...
It was really peaceful while we walked up the hill. We encountered a jogger or two but other than that, NO ONE was out here except us and the wildlife.
It was still cool and overcast that morning, but then again, this is San Francisco. The weather here can be unpredictable but we were prepared for the cold with our hoodies.
We were almost at the top...
Hmmmm, this looks like this could be in a horror flick and we were the hapless teenagers about to meet a grisly death...or not.
A few more steps and we would be facing this massive cross on top of a hill (one with a storied past)...More coming up!
