we headed out super early (as in 6:15 am'ish)....
to greet the second day of the new year at a San Diego landmark, Mount Helix, which can be seen at the far right of the photo above. More on the history of the park here.

We've always seen the cross on top of the hill whenever we've gone to East County and today was the day to finally check it out and see the sun rise as well.
These photos are still kind of pinkish/bluish/gray since the sun wasn't out in full force yet. In the distance, you can see Cowles Mountain which we climbed the day before Christmas in 2014). The views are quite nice here, even better than Mount Soledad in my opinion. There seems like more to see up here (you can only see so much ocean views).

The top of Mount Helix is about 1300 feet.
Panning to the right, more of East County....

View of the theater looking down (east view). This is where they hold Easter services at sunrise. It must be spectacular.

The moon was still out...

The clouds were a cotton candy pink hue...You can see the Pacific Ocean from afar, the tip of Point Loma, downtown San Diego and in the left half of the photo, the 125 freeway. And although you can't see it in the photo, if I panned farther to my left, you could see the Coronado Islands (including Mummy Island).

A quick peek to the east where the sun was finally making its appearance...

Compare the quality of the light now...

Looking west again...

You can see the shadow of Mount Helix on the left. There's Cowles Mountain again...

TC's foot was hurting (she had surgery the week before) so we didn't stay too much longer.

View from center stage looking west.

One last look at the theater...

Free magazine from the bulletin board.

There is one way up the mountain, and one way down.

Heading down the drive now...

One last look as we drove down Mount Helix...

Here's a video where this guy used his drone to film the mountain (unfortunately, he used some Gregorian chant-like music, turn off if this annoys you as it did me):
One more video about what that infamous rotating house on the side of Mount Helix looks like from the INSIDE:
We'll have to take the trails up near the top of the mountain next time so we can

It was good we went there early in the morning even though it was super cold. Parking was easy to find and hardly anyone was there. After enjoying the 360 degree views of San Diego, we headed west once again...this time for breakfast.
