which meant of course, we had to go there.
The original Mary's in Santee closed late last year and a new one opened up down the road. Now there is a second location...
It is on the southeast corner of Maine and Laurel in downtown Lakeside.
The building dates from 1910 and used to house the Lakeside Hardware and Lumber Company (more info in article posted at the end). Joel Scalzitti the owner of this location used to work at the original Mary's and was Mary's "right hand man".
Today was their grand opening!
Timing is everything I suppose because when we arrived, there was no line whatsoever.
Literally a minute after we got in, several groups of people came in for some donut treats. Business was pretty steady too with people coming in and taking donuts to go.
Prices are the same as their Santee location. It is quite spacious in here with table to sit at.
All of the standard Mary's favorites were there, including MY favorite, their French crueller!
Bert ordered a half dozen plus four of the cream puffs (lemon, raspberry, bavarian cream and chocolate). I was bummed that they were out of blueberry filled cream puffs.

So we got the half dozen plus the four cream puffs. No sooner had we sat down, one of the workers came by to give us more cream puffs.
Here they are - he asked if we ever tried the cream puffs and then deposited four on our table. Then he came with three raspberry filled cream puffs and gave those to us too! This was quite nice and unexpected. These were freshly made, warm, light, and fluffy.
There was only one panel of photos so far. The other Mary's has panel upon panel of photos of their customers and friends. Also hung on the walls were framed black and white photos of old time San Diego, such as the Hotel Del Coronado (seen below), downtown, and the Spreckles Organ Pavilion to name a few.
It was nice seeing this photo of the original Mary's on Mission Gorge Road.
More striated clouds outside...TC was able to park around the corner without any problems. Luckily there was a clear spot on the curb so she didn't have to parallel park between cars.

I'm glad that we were able to stop by for their grand opening. Directly behind the building is a dirt parking lot area. It is public parking, but according to the employee Bert spoke with, another portion will be opened for even more parking for Mary's and nearby shops. I hope that Mary's Donuts find success at this second location in downtown Santee. The employees were friendly and welcoming and it was nice being treated to a few complimentary cream puffs!
