Blackmarket Bakery fail, so Plan B - Return to Antique Row Cafe, Normal Heights

I read online that Blackmarket had their soft opening yesterday. Since I was not able to go, I thought we could go there early on Saturday...

Their website lists their hours at 7 am - 7 pm.

We found out it was not to be...

It turns out that they would be opening later in the afternoon, at  3 pm.  They would be doing their normal hours starting next week.

We'd come this far and didn't want to have to go anywhere else to have breakfast so Antique Row Cafe it was. Both TC and Bert hadn't been before and I thought they would both like it here.  I myself  planned to eat light because today was also the same day as the San Diego Serbian Festival and I wanted to save my appetite for that.

It was pretty foggy that morning and burned off by the time we left.

Bert and TC liked the decor - it was chockfull of memorabilia from the 50's, 60's and 70's. We were seated at the 2nd table to the left of the entrance.

Our breakfast:

Bert's Belgian waffle with two strips of bacon and scrambled eggs.

TC's "build your own omelette" (cheese, bacon, spinach and avocado) with hash browns and toast:

LOOK at that CRUST!  Wow.   I'm glad TC let me have a few tastes of that crisp golden brown crust.

My lone item, the Monterey potato cake. Such a different version from the one served at Beef 'n Bun but just as good. For one thing, it's much bigger and it also has that same golden brown and crisp crust gilding the creamy cheesy herbed potato goodness within.

TC barely made a dent in hers. I had about a third of mine. Remember...saving the appetite. You'll see.

Previous visit to Antique Row Cafe:
April 2016 with MFH

Bert enjoyed his breakfast. It was simple but well done. Our server was a  pretty attentive and nice young man. It was neat for him and TC to look at all of the walls to try to identify the movie stars and musicians.

As for Blackmarket Bakery, we will have to wait until the next weekend or so to try it out...

Ooo... the crust on that hash brown looks so good! The potato cake also looks really delicious. I love a good crust on potato items. I actually have never been here before, either. I've passed it so many times but have never gone.

Hi Mary - yes, that crust on both the hash brown and potato cakes was excellent. Their pan must be well seasoned. You should give this place a try; they have a pretty extensive menu.
