Summer Road Trip 2016 - Day 4: Santa Barbara's Moreton Bay Fig Tree & Carpinteria's World's largest Torrey Pine

Before leaving Santa Barbara, we made a quick stop to see the famed Moreton Bay Fig Tree...

While San Diego boasts its own Moreton Bay Fig tree (the Tallest one actually, next to the SD Museum of Natural History; over 80 feet high)...

Santa Barbara can lay claim to having the Widest Moreton Bay Fig Tree (more than 176 feet across).

It is located next to the Greyhound station and an old train car. You can read about the history below:

The tree is fenced off to protect the tree. As we stood there, we marveled at how wide it was and how far reaching and thick the branches were.

A few snapshots and we were outta here!

Before hitting Ventura, we stopped once again in the cute seaside town of Carpinteria.

As we parked near our coffee destination, we noticed  a sign at the base of a tall tree.

It turns out that this was the largest known Torrey Pine; which has been here since the late 1800's. San Diegans may be familiar with the Torrey Pine name, as our region is home to this unique tree. It's pretty rare to find it in other places. It is only found near the Torrey Pines State Reserve and the Channel Islands.  The Torrey Pine is distinguished by having only five pine needles on each needle cluster.

We didn't even realize this significant tree was here. So we saw two interesting trees in one morning!
