THE one thing I asked for as a food souvenir from Philadelphia was a specific candy that has been around for nearly one century...
Goldenberg's Peanut Chews.

KD was kind enough to bring back FIVE King Size bars (one original dark and four milk chocolate). Each bar had eight bite sized pieces inside.

From the candy company's website:
"Goldenberg's Peanut Chews" candies were developed in 1917 by the Goldenberg family and used by the military during WWI as a ration bar. The high energy, high protein recipe and unique taste made it popular with the troops and have helped it remain popular today."
The unique flavor comes from molasses, which makes it chewy but also imparts an old-timey taste that you know is not from regular white sugar.

Of the two varieties, I liked the original dark chocolate the best. I also like that the King Size version is already portioned and not something you would have to bite off awkwardly. If you like peanuts, then you might like these since each piece is chock full of nuts.
Here is a video about how Goldenberg's Peanut Chews are made:

You can order the candy online as well:

I'm lucky that my friend KD puts up with my wierd requests. It's always fun trying candies from different cities and as you may surmise, many cities have regional candies that are beloved over there but unheard of elsewhere. I'm glad I was able to try a taste of these candies from KD.
