Starstruck

As promised...

Bite this yo'...

A few weekends ago, TC and I were out doing errands. A quick drive by on Palm Avenue proved what I was hoping to be true...

Yes! Stardust Donuts was open!

The donuts were on top of an old City Beat since they don't give out boxes here (just paper bags). My total for all seven (there was an extra cinnamon roll which I excluded from the group shot) was less than $4.

The "carmel pecan" roll (that's their spelling not mine)...

The Chocolate Glazed...

Their famous Cinnamon Roll. We love that this is not a monstrously huge thing. The glaze is also inside the donut!

The donut show down...

Of this batch, my favorite was the chocolate glazed. It practically melted in my mouth. I also liked the pecan topped donut.  TC inhaled the raspberry filled in the car on the way home. The rest were shared by us all later that evening. We were so happy to see the "open" sign because it's usually hit and miss with this place. The owner only opens when he feels like it.

Who recently visited Stardust?
Mary of This Tasty Life was here late last year:
"Star Dust Donuts and searching for Sea Shells in Imperial Beach"

My previous visits here:
May 2011 which also links other blogger's posts and media reviews.
November 2011

Found this cool video on youtube from 2011:

Apparently this was filmed when both brothers were stil alive.

Here is a recent article from SD City Beat (January 2013):
Stardust Donut Shop is a Way of Life" which reveals the sad news that Cliff Arnold is now the sole worker at Stardust. His brother Ed, whom he was a partner at the shop for 45 years, died last summer.
These donuts are such a cult favorite and I hope he continues working at this South Bay institution.

Mmm, Stardust donuts! Man we went down to the Outlet mall in San Ysidro this weekend and I totally forgot to try and go by Stardust for donuts. Oh well, next time! They didn't have any filled donuts on my visit - hopefully next time.
